First I need thank those who have submitted owner reports of O'Day sailboats, especially the 25. I have been thinking of taking up sailing for a number of years and recently saw an ad for an 1978 O'Day 25 very near my home. To make a long story short, because I did an Internet search and discovered this great website/resource, I was able read the owner reports/reviews on my possible purchase. Because of what I read, I was able to speak to the seller over the telephone, inspected the boat, and made a deal all in 1 day (actually within an 8 hour period). My boat appears to be in very good condition. All thanks to this website.

Now the fun begins. Although I had a 16' Venture catamaran about 20 years ago, I'm essentially a beginner, so, I look forward to communicating with & learning from all the experienced O'Day owners on this website. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Talk to you soon.

Thanks again.

Oday 25 New London,
Welcome Rednomad !

You have come to the right site. I bought a 1976 O'Day 25 in 2002 and have gained a great deal of knowledge and advice from the sailors on this site.

I think you will enjoy the 25'. It is a sturdy little boat that handles well and is very forgiving.

Best of Luck

Thanks for the kind welcome...

and encouraging words. I've met a gregarious sailor who has an Ericson two slips over from mine and he's offered to join me on my boat for a lesson to get me started. I'll let all of you know how it goes.

Cheers,

O'Day 25's

This is our second season with our 1980 O'Day 25--she's a great weekender, although we would spend up to 4 to 5 days at a time on her during the summer. When the ice and beer ran out, we'd hit the marina!

She's a good, solid boat and we've been very happy with her. She has a weather helm in heavy winds--reefing is a good thing--she sails very well with reefed main and jib in winds of 15-20 knots.

Her name is Sancha*--see Urban Dictionary definition below--she takes all of my husband's money and then she takes all mine, too!

A sancha is your second lady. Not your wife, or your girlfriend, but your number two. If something were to happen to your wife or girlfriend (i.e. freak accident) your sancha would be there to wipe away your tears.

O'Day 25

I have been doing a refit on our O'Day 25. It is in great shape but while it is dry I want to do a rather complete refit. You know you have it bad when your wife comes home with a package of fiberglass mat and you get really excited!!

I have been sailing for quite a few years and have swapped back and forth between power boats and sailboats. I never quite get as excited about the power boats. There is just a special sickness about owning a sailboat.

I agree this site is a wealth of information, there is so much beyond the forums. I am very thankful to the people who take the time to scan in the pdfs that I have printed.

Good choice!

Hello rednomad,
Hey, since you are now an owner, why don't you sign in so we can get to know you. Where are you from, where did you buy the boat, have you sailed her yet?
I have owned 2- 25cb's. The first was a 78. the one I now sail is a 79.
They have few common flaws but the ones they have need to be fixed.
I think you will find it fast for a 25 yet on the roomy side (interior) for a 25. Catalina owners think the cockpits too small but I think a boat this size is great to single hand or with one other person. OK, maybe the occasional visiting couple.
Everything on the boat is at your fingertips, the tiller, the winches, the main sheet. I love it's lay out.
welcome,
r.w.landau

Welcome to the site rednomad,
I am new to sailing, I recommend the Steve and Doris Colgate Offshore sailing book "learn to sail and 3 days". I too think the 25 is a great boat and can be single handed well in light to moderate wind. I have a 1980. Best wishes

I recommend "The Complete Sailor" by David Seidman

I just picked it up and love it. It is well written and has great illustrations. It talks about sailing from the standpoint of a newbie, like he is reading my mind-- for example when I look at some odd contraption on my boat with a bunch of pulleys and ropes and wonder what that is for, he explains what it is, how it works, its benefits and alternate options. it is good for beginners and perhaps somewhat for intermediates. It discusses the historical evolution of sailing and sailboat design through the ages, and uses that history lesson to explain how that aspect of a boat functions.

It was not my first book on sailing, but I wish it was.

Welcome to the club, Rednomad!:)

welcome to sailing aboard your new 25

Can't wait to hear how she sails...you have lots of company here and between us we have handled just about every kind of issue with the 25. Is she c/b or fin keel model? How is she powered? Where do you plan to sail her?
