Hi,

Has anyone done a substantial redesign of the Vega interior?

Besides wanting to insulate the hull, I'm now thinking to start over with a more contemporary layout. As I plan to live aboard, I want comfort, a sense of space...and much brighter.

I'm also willing to consider doing away with one of the bunks, maybe the starboard side, adding a navigation table which includes VHF radio, maybe a new electrical panel, etc.

I realize that the narrow beam places some restrictions but I saw a Hunter 27 with a pull-out cooler under the sink which would free up some space.

Does anybody have any drawings of the Vega interior for design change.

Hi Steven,One suggestion if you haven't done it, is to browse through the pictures section of the albin vega group page on yahoo. Some interesting ideas in there.

I think for live-aboard, a dinette would be a great modification. The ones I've seen have been done on the port side, as the starboard bunk is the longer one, great if you are tall!

In the 'photos' section, in an album called "Dinette Conversion", there're several dinettes featured.

Are the photos of the gorgeous woodwork and insulated deck undersides of circumnavigator "Lorna Doone"?

If your interior is painted in a speckled gray, common in a lot of Vegas, a coat of light-coloured paint makes a huge difference to brighten up the interior.

One nice thing about the Vega is that the interior is pretty much removable with a few hand tools. Some of the galley cabinets are glued together, but everything forward of that is attached with nuts, bolts, and screws.

If I were doing a dinette I'd remove the port settee and build a cardboard mockup first, then a more solid mockup using scrap plywood. I'd leave the forward bulkheads in place as they play a major role in supporting the mast beam and mast, and because I like the forward cabin layout.

The possibilities are endless!

Thanks for the photo link...I like the brightness of Lyra. It may seem sacrilegious to some to paint wood or laminate but I like the white with maybe teak or mahogany as trim with a teak/holly sole. I will likely eliminate one of the bunks, maybe starboard side (I am just under 5'8") and rethink the whole space.

One more advantage of putting the dinette on the port side is that the air duct cover along the floor gives you a more-or-less level foot rest.
Just a thought ...

I am only 5'7" and I find the port settee a little confining (too short) for sleeping. Frank Gallardo Jr
