Just saw the pics of catalina's new 375 and can't help notice the similarities with contemporary Hunters, e.g., same furling system on the main, deck plan, interior upgrades, etc. Is this a sign their other models are also getting an upgrade?
making the C34. From my experience, and pictures and the brochures (now on the CY website) it looks like a C350 on steroids. Wide open saloon plan with no handholds among other things. Much discussion on the C36 website message board and most likely much more on their C36 email list. This boat looks like a harbor queen and not a great sailboat. It is somewhat less boxy than the C350. Once someone gets one and starts reporting on its sailing abilities (or lack thereof) I'll withhold judgment beyond my initial first impressions.
I am not crazy about any of the new styles of any of the manufacturers. I don't like the interior layouts, or the exterior styling. I have owned a 1993 C36 since new, and I would not consider any of the new boats (Catalina, Beneteau, Hunter, Hanse, Jeanneau, Delphia, or anything that resembles any of these).I prefer the Tartan, C&C, Saber, styling. But, then, I am quite Jaded.
...do you think these manufacturers design in a vacuum? They do really good market research; after all, their success depends on it. So, I think they hit more than miss, but it's is so true that you can do all the research in the world and misinterpret it or find out what the customer thinks they want vs. what they will buy may be two very different things. A lot of products are designed by competant people
and then modified by marketing and accounting. Build a boat with handholds every three feet and some people will wonder, "if the boat has those , is it safe?" Accounting will ask how much they cost and marketing will complain that the handholds are hurting sales.
I don't like the Ikea like woodwork inside. They could say it never need varnishing. But I am old fashion and like the good old furnature grade teak, holly and what have you. Just make the interior nicer.
