Hello all
I own an albin cumulus 28' and I am curious how much similarity
there is between the Vega and the Cumulus. We purchased our boat last
spring and we had a fantastic season last year with it.It seems that
it is a rare model, or at least I have not seen too much written
about it.It handles exremely well and we love the looks. Right now We
are getting it ready for the season coming up.
The cumulus has an iron keel on it, and we are planning on
fairing it with west system epoxy. I have done this various times
having worked at a sailing club, but my problem is that it seems that
we had to knock of the resin every spring and regrind the keels. I
assume the Vega has an iron keel as well and I was wondering if
anyone here has had experience with this aspect of the process. Oh
well, off to bed, and nice to talk with Vega owners.

P.S. There are a few of the Vegas up here in Boston and I love the
lines on you're model as well.

Welcome aboard Tim!

Hmmmmm....don't think I've ever heard of the Cumulus 28, perhaps some of our European members are familiar with this boat. In any case, the Vega does not have an exposed iron keel. The keel ballast is scrap, encapsulated in the fiberglass so Vega owners don't have this problem. Stick around though, I'd love to hear more about your Cumulus (And maybe see some pictures)

Hi All

The Cumulus is quite a well know Albin yacht. We have a couple in the UK
Vega club (VAGB). There are lots in Sweden and Denmark.

Hi All, I'm a new Vega owner (hull 397) in Boston Ma. I had a Coronado 25 last year, which I sold. I started looking around for another sailboat, and stumbled upon this one in RI. After a little research I had to buy it!! It needs a little work, but seems to be a keeper. I am very impressed with the ruggedness - it seems like a seriously heavy duty boat.

somebody removed the engine and installed a sailmaster on a kicker bracket. I am tending toward keeping that way to have that space below for storage, but that idea is subject to revision.

I wonder how many other Vegas there are in Mass.? Any other owners on here near me?

I am a Vega owner in Mass. but I keep my boat in CT. I met a truck driver, originally from Ireland. who has a Vega and keeps it at the South Boston YC. Kristopher Setchfield is from Mass. and just bought a Vega which he keeps at Lake Champlain on the New York side.

Other than that I don't know of anyone else from Mass., but it will be interesting to hear other responses.

Thank you,

Hi,

I'm not in Mass., but I do have hull number 398 so our boats are probably pretty similar. You'll love this little boat!

Welcome to the newcomer! Now to change the subject abit. Who is doing what for insurance in the States? Lyric is very close to getting back into the ocean and now the marina is going to require $500,000. of liability insurance. Any thoughts on this and what companies are other owners insuring with? Thanks! Walt

Wow, $500,000 liability. I was suprised when my marina wanted $300,000 in liability.

I've used State Farm which also covers my home and auto and other stuff. They never asked for a survey-which was a good thing because when I initially got the boat I don't think she would have passed an insurance survey.

I checked the fine print on my policy before I took the boat up to Maine last year and -if I remember correctly- the policy covers the boat up to 75 miles offshore and in Canadian waters. I think I pay about $300.00 / year for the $300,000 liability and replacement up to $15,000. I don't recall offhand what my deductable is.

Hey gang,

The manual says shutting off key while engine running may damage the
regulator.

My key got turned off accidentally for less than a minute.

Anyone know how to check the regulator?

Thanks,

Just attach a multimeter to + and - output from reg when engine running.
If you are getting well over 14V then it's ok I'd say.

Thanks John, but how does one test whether the regulator continues to
allow the alternator to over-charge the battery?

My understanding is that a properly functioning regulator shuts off the
charge once the battery is fully charged. A blown regulator, I'm told,
can result in a cooked (over-charged) battery.

My battery is getting over 14 volts when the motor is running - but even
after two hours of running the voltage going in does not appear to drop
off. Am I cooking my battery?

Sorry Trevor. I should have realised that you already knew the obvious! I'll stay quiet and let the experts reply.

No worries John. When it comes to electricity, nothing is obvious to
me:) Thanks again.

Hi Walt,

I recently changed to BoatUS as well - I am quite happy with them; the only drawback is the requirement of a survey (with the boat hauled). I decided to spring for that - now I have a pretty booklet with pictures and all kinds of useless comments (o.k., maybe a couple useful ones as well) from the surveyor.. ;-)
Anyway, if you discount the survey cost, I found BoatUS much more comprehensive and cheaper than the insurance I used to have. One idea to keep in mind: Once you have the $300,000 coverage from a proper boat insurance, you can INCREASE this amount (e.g., to $500,000) by buying an "Umbrella policy" from your car or house insurance. I did this with GEICO, although I can't say I did a direct comparison of what it what cost to increase coverage from BoatUS to $500,000. An umbrella policy may be a better deal anyway, since it covers all kinds of liability, not only boat-related.

Just my 5 cents - Sebastian (V1060 VegaLyra)

To determine if you are overcharging your battery, monitor the fluid level in the cells and if you are always needing to add water, then. "Yes" you are overcharging. Of course this isn't much help with a gel cell battery.

YMMV
