Hello,
My name is Mike and I am a new (9 months ago) owner of a 1980 H33-C
I found this forum last night and stayed up until 3am reading forum archives and owner modifications, It is great to find other people with the same exact boat and love it as much as i do. I bought my 1980 H33-C from my aging neighboor (93 years old), and most everything needed some form of attention. I have had the boat out of the water since late march bringing it back to former glory, while this 30+ year old boat was in need of refit I was surprised to find how strongly the "backbone" of this boat was built and designed. I have really enjoyed reading everyones posts and discussions, I will post pictures and descriptions of the modifications I have aready done as soon as i get some more free time

I f I remember right, and according to his son, JC II, John Cerubini called the 33 the "queen of the fleet."

Do let us know how your first months with yours go. I'm glad to hear that you are mixing sailing with repair/upgrade. I love to sail our '77 h27, and fit in the maintenance somehow!

Welcome Mike! I am also relatively new to the forum but everyone here has been great with welcomes and suggestions. Good luck with the work you are doing and your good 'ol S/V. Like you, I have found the H33C to have good bones; worthy of the work you'll be putting into her.

Welcome aboard Mike. Could you post a picture of your boat? Can't expand the avatar and would like to see that paint scheme. Are you going to stay with that? The H33 should be perfect for the Chesapeake and exploring the east coast. But a circumnavigation?

Thanks for the welcome, yeah i did some pretty extensive fiberglass work on the toe rail (working on a full writeup for the owner mod. page) and needed to paint the topsides. The boat is being renamed Redbeard after a close friend of mine that passed away 2 years ago, he had a viking beard that was bright red, hence the name. I decided a crimson bow seemed appropriate, however un-traditional as it may be i think it turned out pretty cool. I rebuilt the 2qm15 yanmar last winter and have plans to lower it through the companionway with a friends cherry picker next week before splashing soon after. And by the way i have the service manual on pdf for any H33 owners with the original Ironwind still clanking away below decks. Ed, I realize that a circumnavigation is a bit ambitious, But I would like to cruise the Med. at the least. But why not all the way? people have done it in smaller boats and this hull seems above average in terms of stoutness what shortcoming do you think the boat has in blue water? (i hope that didnt sound openminded)

This could be interesting. We should start a Cherubini circumnavigation thread. Keep it to the Cherubini forum since non-Cherubini owners have no idea what we are working with. As an aside I would leave tomorrow if my personal circumstances were different. But I have a ton(of dollar bills) in upgrades.

I have the distinction of probably having asked the dumbest questions possible, but the usual suspects were partient with me and always helped (Rich, Ed, Steve,Sam, etc)
I have the xact same boat, 1982 model
And I like the colour combination: unusual, but nice
Please post pictures of the inside
I re-covered all the inside with cedar panels I bought from someone here in Houston: it cost me about $100.00 and I removed all the smelly carpet on the bulkheads, put insulation in, furring stripos and then the panels
It came very nice
Still working on all fronts, but have sailed a few times

The Cherubini Hunters are among the very few production boats I would consider taking offshore. I found my 33 very seaworthy and strong. Very fun to sail but cranky downwind. I don't think the 37C, which I presently have, is as much fun to sail, especially upwind, but she is far more comfortable, particularly downwind. I have spoken with a couple of sailors who have had their 37C's across the Atlantic and loved them. I have seen 33s in the Caribbean and Central America. They likely got there by doing serious ocean passages. Of course some upgrading would be essential - standing rigging, spare parts, below decks autopilot, radar, SSB etc. But the bones are there IMHO.

Caveat - it would be unfair of me to extend these comments to shoal draft models as I have never sailed them but I doubt they would be less seaworthy.

Yeah that would be fun, If I dont hit a snag i plan on doing a several week trip down the bay coinciding with spring trophy rock season. Might have to add some aluminum cans to the ice box for that trip (purely for ballast haha). I'll let you know when it gets closer but it would be fun to see both boats side by side after 30 years.

Jorge, I too have ripped out all the carpet that was glued to the hull and plan on covering with wood slats, I'd love details on how you attached and any lessons you learned in hindsight of that project.

sandpiper, Those upgrades are at the top of my list before heading offshore, I originallly thought the rigging (original) was still in good shape based on a visual inspection but have learned about the hidden dangers (work hardening, crevice corosion, etc.) and without a doubt will replace the rig before heading past norfolk. Has anybody done this themselves? I am considering pulling the mast with a bridge and taking the stick on land to be rewired and possible painted, all the wire rigging could then be labeled and removed and taken to a rig shop to be duplicated (much much cheaper from what I've heard). Has anybody done this and what kind of experience did you have?

Mike, I just this summer sent all of my standing rigging to Seco South for duplication. They are the original supplier of our rigs to Hunter. Their price cannot be beat.

I bought only the wire with the swaged eyes and studs. I am going to reuse the turnbuckles. I painted my mast this summer and will install the new rigging and new furler come spring. I also bought all new lifelines from Seco South.

Welcome Aboard

Congratulations and welcome. Based upon all the positive comments I found here and other websites, I purchased a 1979 Hunter 33 back in July. Like yours, almost everything needed attention. I was going to bring her down to North Carolina but with all the things that I needed to have done to give me a peace of mind, I decided to not pressure myself with the time and financial retraints of turning everything around in a couple of months and left her in her slip at Tidewater Yacht Marina. I am so glad I did. We (my wife and I and sometimes my two teenage grands...they love the boat) go up every two or three weeks and work on upfitting, outfitting, repair and other projects. My punchlist was rather long, but it is rewarding to see things slowly take shape. I just sent the sails off to be reconditioned at Sailcare. In a few weeks my next big project is to have the boat pulled and the cutlass bearing and shaft replaced and the stuffing box repacked.

Hunterowners have been a great place for help and to see what others are doing. I am looking forward to following yours and other modifications as I bring my Hunter 33 back to its former glory.

My original destination was Matthews Point Marina in Havelock, NC...south of New Bern on the Neuse River. Plan to sail Pamlico Sound. Matthews Point Marina is a smaller marina across from Oriental, NC...beautiful views. Thinking of retiring in the New Bern, NC or Washington, NC. I now live in Clayton, NC and work in downtown Raleigh. I just have to bring myself at peace with being in Hurricane Alley. While I was contemplating whether to bring the Hunter 33 down then or later, Hurricane Irene hit, causing a lot of damage...was glad I had not brought her down.

I had Ladylove at Matthew's Point from Oct. 2007 until Mar. 2009. Beautiful spot but the water is shallow. Is your H33 a shoal draft? My first wife and I always vacationed at Atlantic Beach, love Morehead City and Beaufort. Drove down there often. But while at Matthew's usually went to Havelock. Occasionally sailed over to Oriental. Pictures, Ladylove at Matthew's Point. Miss that place. Nice people there.

I am also a new ( two days before Irene ) owner of a 1981 Hunter 25 that I live aboard , and have been reading everything I can on this site , am currently working on solving how to heat ( I am in NY ) , anyone got anything on that ( I have no shore power ) . Also reading about all the refitting , which as of now cannot afford , but have already circumnavigated Long Island with minimal problems. Also looking for a mainsail, as mine is I believe the original and is in bad shape .
