Hi there I am new to the Forum, I have had a great time sailing my Sandpiper565 all over Lake Ontario in the the past 4 years. I am a strong advocate for the KISS method of sailing after all sailing should be fun not a job. I am hoping to be able to share some of my " Windy Tales " and in general just to hang out a chew the fat.

Are there any other Sandpipers on here?

Not familiar with the Sandpiper so Googled it. I see there is an Owner's Forum and I found this: http://sailquest.com/market/models/spipe.htm . If you are sailing on Ontario it is obviously a solid boat. The keel is interesting in the drawing. I assume it cranks straight up into the trunk. At any rate "welcome aboard".

Thanks for the welcome Ed, the Sandpiper's 300lb keel hangs on a brass naval jack screw, 97 turns will retract and/or extend the keel. When the keel is all the way up the boat is not only beachable but will sit flat. I am not sure about crossing oceans with her but I have been out on Lake Ontario with 25+kt winds and 6'- 10' waves. With a 20min rig and launch along with easy towing the Sandpiper is a very dependable and forgiving little boat, great for weekending and short cruising.

Nice looking boat.

5.65 m, lets see, that's, um, 5.65 x 3.28, about 18.24 feet. I feel better now.

Tell me is 23c outside and I don't know if I should wear a coat or shorts and a T-shirt.

97 turns? Yeesh, that's a lot of cranking! It's an interesting approach and a nice looking little boat. Welcome!

Thanks Stu for the welcome and info. on the other Piper Sailor.

Thanks kpgraci for the welcome, sorry about the metric, I am oldschool I still convert from one to the other.
23c..... 23 x 2 + 32= 78F

Thanks for the welcome sinnettc, 97 turns is a bit on the extreme side, hence why I installed a beer holder next to the crank.

Thanks again for the welcome .

Post your photos to photobucket.com and once they are on there. It will show 3 link choices below each picture. Go to img link and copy that and then come back to your post and paste the link. Wallaaaa... Just like that you have posted a pic.

Thanks Tom, I have used the IMG Link code on other forums but for some reason on this forum when I right click on the post the menu window with the paste option does not pop up. So I just uploaded the photo on to here and attached it, seems to have worked ok.

Hi Badmoon

I'm a former Sandpiper owner myself. Great boat! Sailed her for many years, until my sons started to grow! I need more room, so I got me a Sirius.

Regards

Eric

Hi Eric, yeah I think I remember you from the other forum, that was awhile ago. How do you like your Sirius 21? I know what you mean about the kids, I have have to step off the boat just to change my mind. The upside is they make great movable ballast, I really think I am sailing faster since they got bigger.

Welcome! Sounds like a well thought design. I wonder if you could motorize the jack screw, sounds like alot of "work".

Thanks for the welcome Fly, the Sandpiper was a British design called a Sailfish, the rights were sold to a Canadian company in the mid 70's. Production of the Sandpiper came to an end in the late 80's, they had an odd way of numbering the boats so the number built is kind of a mystery. As far as the keel goes the bearings make easy work of the whole operation takes about 30sec. I have also found by placing a cold frosty beer in the holder next to the keel housing that the whole process has become automatic, by the time I go hank on the jiib and get back we are good to go.

Lots of information can be found here.....
