I have just purchased a mainsail for my 30'trbs catalina and I got a great price on it from somerset sails in Barker New York. Researching the forum comments I decided on a loose foot, full battens, 2 reef points and it came with a radial clew all for $1150 + tax! With a tall rig you need 2 reef points because you end up reefing earlier than a standard rig. I had a loose foot on my old sail and it allowed better adjustment for sail shape. Call Martin at 800-323-9464 about price, they're also on e-bay with 25 different sails ready made. Best thing also is that they are made in the U.S.A.!!!!I am purchasing anew main this winter. any comments on loose foot vs. bolt rope in boom? I have heard Pros and Cons on both. Thanks BobCat
Thanks for letting me know about Somerset Sails. I spoke to martin and was very impressed. I ordered the main from Somerset. Very impressed and a great price. I will let you all know how I make out but I do not for see any problemsI just got my mainsail yesterday and I am VERY happy with it.Martin is a breath of fresh air when it comes to people who blow smoke up your _ _ _!!! He's had his own loft since 1987 and has worked for other big name sail makers so he has a large amount of experience. When the day comes to get a genoa I know who to call. Check out his website at somersetsails.com to see some of his work.
THe sail looks good. However, After mailing my old sail to him, he used the oldBarnstormer... Did you get a sail bag with your sail?
Bobcat, I didn't get a sail bag but I just kept my old one. Tried out my new main last week and LOVED it. I am surprised that Martin gave you a hard time about the numbers. I know he is swamped with orders because everyone ordered late in the spring but that is no excuse for blowing up at a customer. He has been straight with me since Christmas when I ordered my main and has answered all of my questions and then some. I also ordered a cruz radial headsail which should be coming in a week. Maybe talk again with him to answer any more problems you might have. Sorry you have had issues with him but he has very good value sails in my opinion.THe sail looks good. Dutchman pockets (which I OK'ed). He screwed up the sail #. I called him and he would not admit that he goofed. He said in very strong terms that he copied the #s off the old sail. I had to email him a picture of my old sail #. I mailed the sail back to him and he sail he would cover the cost of shipping. I am still waiting for the check. Also , no sail bag.
He got very nasty....
He finally agreed and he is sending me a sail bag that I can leave the battens in and roll the sail. I understand that he is busy but he needs to chill when something doesn't go right not to the customers fault. ThanksBobcat, I didn't get a sail bag but I just kept my old one. I have still not received a sail bag. I told him I wanted a regular bag. He is sending me a long bag so I don't have to remove the battens. He just doesn't get it.. What didn't he understand??????????I would have to say that when there's so much competition out there for your business when it comes to replacing expensive as hell sails, that the sail maker should make no excuses when screwing up the details, like your numbers which are kinda important. I use Ullman in Deltaville, Va. & they do it right & don't make excuses or blame the customer. Also when you pay over a grand for a sail, I thought that a sail bag was customary. It is when you buy from the big guys like North, UK, & Ullman!
ps. They may be more expensive but my S 2 had North sails that were 25 years old, & still held their shape & were reasonably crisp for sails of that age is unheard of. Plus when you make an investment with new sails, & go to sell the boat down the road, North & UK sell themselves. A quality rep. matters.
I know that when I bought my C 30 & unfurled that big genoa & saw that U.K. Halsey logo, it put a smile on my face & sealed the deal.
I finally received the sailbag. Made of the same material as a Home Depot Blue plastic tarp. It is the type that you roll your sail with the battens in and this way the sail doesn't crease.Sorry to hear that Bob, I can feel your frustration.
Some people just don't get it, & don't deserve to stay in business in
this economy, when so many good sail lofts are out there that want your business.
BTW, I was over at a local sail loft recently in Gloucester, VA, just because I needed a couple of twist retaining clips for my main sail cover that were a little worn. The guy that owned the place was a total a hole, & acted like he was too busy to be bothered by my small request. He was ready to leave, & even sweared about having to help me.
I could see that his assistant was embarrassed by his boss'es poor attitude.
That's one guy who won't be getting my business in the future when I need new canvas.
People in service professions need to remember that we also remember how we're treated, & that always determines who we do business with.
