I'm currently shopping for a new mainsail for my 1988 C-22.The time has come to replace the original main. I'm looking at a mainsail from Lee Sails and would appreciate hearing pros and cons about the workmanship and quality of Lee Sails. Thanks..... Jack OB

lesson in sails

Hey Jack, dont know about "Lee Sails" BUT, what I do know, I'll pass on about sails....All sails are not created the same in respect to design and shape.... I,ve always believed that if you want the best sail built...have it built by a local sailmaker... I now own 4 different mains... Being the delta area has light winds, the sail for that area is a full batten main and cut very full for a powerful shape.. I also race off-shore so the sail built for that area is kevlar and flatter shape, also full batten... If the fuller shaped sail was used in the bay or off-shore...I would be overpowered and on my side most of the time..where if I used the kevlar sail with a flatter shape in the delta, I would also lose.... I would suggest finding a sailmaker in your area and have a good talk with him... He will know the area and the right design, shape, and weight of sail to use..... Randy

Stay away from full batten main

Jack: Stay away from full batten main sails on a C22, they are not allowed when racing under C22 national association rules. Barry Broyles C22 #1909 "Brighteyes"

Have you looked in this sites chandlery? The doyle sails are built in the states, and Doyle is a reputable Sailmaker. There is also several sailmakers in your area, including a Doyle loft on City Island NY

stay away from Barry, he dosent know what he's tal

In many situations a full batten main will out perform a standard sail ...its easier to handle and the shape is more controlable... And if Barry were to keep up on the news, he would know that the full batton main will be accepted by the association.... Many of the racers of the association are pushing the change...
