Ok. Happy yesterday has turned into frustrated today.

Sail kept jamming up in the furling system. The very first wrap of the sail on the furler was not going on smoothly. We kept getting a jam when the sail was about 98% out (1 wrap left on the furler). We ended up taking the sail down and re-hoisting it up the second groove in the furler. Minor improvement.

Then on the sail this evening it jammed about half-way out. Was able to re-furl and then try again. Not smooth but it came out. And then not smooth at the end of the day. Frustrated.

The previous main has worked flawlessly and very smooth for the 18 months I have owned the boat. Hopefully once this new sail has been furled and unfurled a few more times it will devlop some curl and become smoother to operate.

Cheers,
Jim

Very frustrating, Jim. Our dock neighbors this summer had a new to them C350 with roller furling main, and were just as frustrated as you. Good luck.

There was an interesting thread on the beneteau area on this topic a few months ago. One of the diarists suggests trying without the furler car to see if that is the problem. Make sure the furler car is clean and lubricated. Also make sure you, aren't picking up friction against the mast.

I spent a frustrating day today with my furling main and will be trying out the gems shortly.

Dave,

I looked into that. The furler mechanism itself is working very well.

The problem may be the cut of the sail. It almost seems as if there is extra material close to the luff. When the thin bolt rope is in the groove of the furler rod there is a fold of extra sail cloth that "folds" up backwards as that first roll of sail cloth goes on the furler.

I have the halyard very tight. And even if I pull the foot very tight I still have that loose cloth. If I pull down too tight on the main sheet to try and tension up the sail some it gets to a point I can't roll any sail in at all due to excess tension.

Almost seems like the belly of the sail is too big causing that excess material near the luff seam to fold up wrong and jam up the works.

I am going to call the sail company rep I have been working with today and see what he thinks.

Cheers,
Jim

Got 2 emails on this issue. First from the guy at the sail loft. And the second from the previous owner. Both of them told me the same thing -- loosen the halyard. When it is too tight it can cause the furling rod inside the mast to warp causing things to not work properly.

So today I got the sail out with some difficulty and then loosened the halyard. And it worked very well. Sail now furls and unfurls much smoother.

Still have a little binding on the first wrap of the furler when furling (last wrap when unfurling) but I think that will improve after I furl/unfurl a few more times as that still fairly stiff luff seam starts to get used to having a curve/twist in it.

Anyways...happy sailor again.

Cheers,
Jim

Amazing how the tension makes so much difference. After reading this thread the halyard tension might be the reason mine worked so much better this year. Mine always hangs up on that last wrap also until the wind hits it and out it goes. I need to remember our results next year.
