I'm replacing the main on my Oceanis 352 and need to find out what the proper sail weight should be for my in-mast furling system. The original sail is made from 7.5 oz dacron and when it's fully furled into the mast, it barely fits. The quotes I've received specify 8.3 and 8.2 oz, but I'm concerned that a heavier weight sail will not be able to be fully furled into the mast.

Has anyone replaced the main and had it fit OK, and if so, what weight was used for the sail?

I'm assuming your original sail is Neil Pryde? Why not call their HQ in Stratford and ask them their opinion?

I replaced mine several years ago, but don't remember the size. It was smaller than the original and they are only rated for 23 knots of wind, but man does it furl a hell of a lot easier!

Sail Cloth Weight

Hi...not sure if you contacted us regarding the weight of your 352 mainsail?

So, I'll weigh in...(pun intended)
With a 35' boat your right at the place we would normally consider a move from the 7oz range to the 80z range for strength and durability.

Regarding you question about the the thickness; you will NOT have a problem stepping up a weight. The thickness difference is tiny...8.03oz has a thickness of .37 of a mil and the 7.3oz is at .34 of a mil.
So the difference is .03 of 1ml. Tiny. If the sail rolls up 12 times the increase in thickness would be .36 of a 1mil.

The real culprit is in the design and manufacturing of the sail...making sure that the tack and head patches are build correctly but not too stiff and thick.

Hopefully you've called! <grin>
