Depending on the wind and current watch hill or the race. Any advice on planning a trip to Block Island starting at New London.

Watch the current at the Race

Nick, Get a Eldridge tide & Pilot book if you don't already have one and check the currents in The Race (pg 89).

Watch Hill is the way to go

Fisher's Island Sound has it's currents but nothing like The Race. No large traffic either. From New London this rout would be almost a straight shot and is a very pleasant sail. Just be sure of your rout especially by the clumps and through Watch Hill Pass. With the prevailing south-westerlies you'll have a broad reach through FIS and wind on the beam after Watch Hill. Have a great trip!

Either way

We do it all the time either by the race or Watch Hill. As long as you watch the tide you'll be fine. The island gets foged in a lot so be prepared for a slow approach if that happens. Anchoring can be tight at busy times, I usually stick to the deep side of New Harbor that opens after July 1. Also watch for the high speed ferry out of New London to Block he can leave quite the wake.

Napatree

We just spent a week at Napatree. Nice beach, good eating in Watch Hill (but expensive). Last year we went from Block to Connanicut across from Newport. Excellent marina with ferry to Newport.

Moorings

Town moorings are by the Shaw's Cove railroad bridge which is further west than the ferry landings. I don't know the regulations about using the dock near the ferry but you can call Crocker's Boat yard and ask. David Crocker is the harbor master. Bill
