New jib Sail for 21.6

the nor'easters have shredded the edges of our jib sail, despite its being tightly wound. we wondered if anyone has replaced theirs and if so with whose sail - hunters? one from sail loft (reco'd by a friend)

any recommendations as to size and purchase greatly appreciated.

New 216 Jib

We replaced our jib in 2009. We had our local ullman sails loft in Deltaville make it. B/c its integrated into the headstay on the furling, you will have to drop the mast (if its up) and provie the loft the old sail on the stay. We added sunbrella to the leech to protect it better.

The I=21.9', the J=7.3' - if they have the old sail they can measure it.

In hindsight, I would've Increased I and shortend the swivel shackle and wire at the mast attachment point. I would not necessarily increase J.

I also was considering doing a hank on jib instead of the furling. I just did high quality dacron since its protected and rolled on the furling.

I ordered a replacement jib for my Hunter 170 last year from North Sails "Direct". It took 9-10 weeks, they shipped me the wrong sail twice and I finally got the correct sail after threatening to cancel the order. Try Hunter Marine, they will respond quickly.

You can try JSI out of St Petersburg, FL. They were the OEM for sails, before they were JSI. Unless you have custom requirements, in which case they still make the sail in house, the sail is made in Taiwan, but I think it comes in less than 4 weeks.

Please tell us that you're NOT leaving the headsail up on your boat ALL winter?? Furling your headsail is supposed to make it convenient to deploy and retract the sail not to store it year round. If this is happening mid season my suggestion is either remove the sail when you're not aboard or install a jib cover to help protect it. In high winds (nor'easter and hurricanes) however, all sails should be removed from exposure to wind. The added windage puts a great deal of stress on your mooring gear not to mention what it does the the fabric.

Yeah good point Alan. Since the 216 headsail is permanently attached as the headstay you have to drop the mast. One reason for just going to hank on is to take it off - or at least adapt to a foil furling type of design.

Reference to a sail loft...

DCKids - I see you have several options. The Ullman Sails in Deltaville is locally owned by Jerry Latell and they are awesome. He turned my jib around super fast. I instantly felt the differences as compared to the oem sail that north made for Hunter. Since he has made one already and is very familiar with my boat, I look at that as a preferred option with a "live" one at the other end.
