Hunter Legend 35.5 Muskegon,MI.
I purchased a 1990 35.5 Hunter in Sept of 2012 and I am in the process of fixing her up at this time. I have a question that no one seems to be able to answer. The engine exhaust exits below the waterline through a hole in the hull with no metal fitting of any kind. You can see the plywood laminations.
So I asked a fellow at Torrenson Marine:Muskegon Michigan if this was normal and he told me he had never seen an exhaust exit below the waterline and that it may cause some back pressure issues. So while I am doing some fiberglass repairs to the bottom, I am planning on filling the old exit and moving the exhaust up and inserting a stainless fitting. Will I be changing the math used to calculate the exhaust pressure? Does anyone know why they put it there in the first place?

The 34's have an exit below the waterline as well.. not below when sitting, but as soon as a stern wave develops, it is under water.. The engine is fine with the small amount of extra back pressure.. I have thought many times of moving the outlet up onto the transom to stop the constant "blub blub blub" noise when motoring.. after a day or so of listening to that, it gets old ! I think either way is fine.. It was easier and cheaper for Hunter to mold it into the hull rather than spring for a nice stainless outlet..

We had the same thing on hour '85 H'31. It is not an issue. I guess the fellow at Torrenson has not seen many Hunters.

Is there any issue with the coring? Most of the time the glass extends up above the actual water line by several inches.
