I just took delivery of my new Hunter 33 (2004), and it is equiped with two sets of Jib Sheet cars; one mounted on the coach roof, and the other mounted on the deck. Can anyone provide a suggestion of which I should use and why?

Sail Shape & Speed

You use the cars that give you the best sail shape which translates to speed. Typically, you would use the inner ones for pointing (keeping the sail close to centerline of the boat), and the outer ones for running (getting the sail out and full). Steve

jib cars

You didn't say if you got the optional #30 winches mounted aft of the cockpit. If you did then you must use the outer tracks for these winches. Also the jib sheets would pass between the shrouds. If you didn't get these optional winches the you should use cabin top winches and inner tracks and pass sheets inside of shrouds. (Don't know why you would get both tracks if you didn't get aft winches)

Thanks,

Yes, I do have the optional Aft Winches. You indicated that I should pass the jib sheets between the shroud if I use the aft winches, I will have to give that a try. I was sailing this past weekend in some pretty heavy air (for a texas lake) 15-25k and I noticed that sheets where riding hard on the outer most shrouds. I made a note that I would have to do something about chafe prevention. Maybe, I am just rigged incorrectly.

Hey Everett -

Since you're sailing your new 33, how about letting us know what you think of it so far, pro and con. There's a bunch of us waitng for ours to come in.

Early Impressions

I am relatively new to sailing, probably couldn't tell from previous posts. (hah) I previously owned a 2000 Hunter 340 for a brief period, so most of my comments relate the 33 to the 340. Well, I love the 33, it sails very well and is extremely stable. I have had it out in pretty strong winds/gusts (15-25 knots) and the boat does very well, top speed on a broad reach of 6.1 knots, even with me trimming the sails. I am also very impressed with the boat under power, I have the 27hp with three blade prop. In/out of the slip like a dream. The boat was delivered in excellent conditions, only one issue (so far) missing Nuts/Washers on the aft Harken Jib Block. I will keep you posted if I find anything else. I have to also say, I love the looks of the 33. I would be happy to answer any other more specific questions.

Thanks Everett -

Glad to hear you are happy with it so far. I'm moving up from a 290. I think you are the first one on this site to be sailing it. From what I read, it is supposed to be a fast boat. Please let us know if you have any issues with any of the systems. Nick! I was told it was shipping last Thursday, so it should be here soon, I hope. Then a while longer for commissioning. Can't wait!
