I bought hull #1 at Norton's Yacht Sales in Deltaville, Va. I have never owned a boat before. Things that I don't like about the boat but I figured I could modify are a single battery bank of approximately 80 amp-hours and a single burner butane stove. Also cockpit storage is lacking. We were to sail the boat up the Ches. Bay into the Potomac to Colonial Beach, about a 70 mile trip. Since the wind was at our stern we motored with the jib out up the Bay. When we turned into the Potomac I decided to deploy the Main since we were on a beam reach. I immediately started to have problems with the mainsheet wrapping around the binnacle. After a while we decided to furl the main since the wind had picked up quite a bit and I was feeling overpowered. During that evolution the mainsheet again got wrapped up and ended up shearing off the engine throttle control. We had to pull into the Coan RIver for repairs and been there since. I guess it was part operator error but I have no experience with a furling main sheet other than the 15 minute sea trail in very light winds that I had. All I know is Hunter has removed the 27 from their Web Page Boat Model Selection page. I don't know if this is coincidental. the reason I went with the 27 is because I wanted to be able to single hand. I am told that I probably need to keep the main sheet tight at all times during tacks and jibes, furl and unfurl to avoid the tangling. The sheet is only a couple of inches away from the binacle arch. But I have not yet had a chance to prove it. Very dissapointing for a first boat experience.
