Madam Headmistress, Last fall I found a "bulge" in the pumpout hose (at the tank) on my 1992 hunter 30 holding tank. Looks ominous to me and I'm thinking 10 years is time to replace the hoses. Can you recommend the right type hose and any other hints to keep in mind. Thanks, Bruce Z

A bulge in a hose???

That's a new one! I have NO idea what could have caused it, unless it was chemicals ...household chemical bowl cleanears, Lysol, bleach, pine oil cleaners and anything containing petroleum products are highly destructive to everything in the system, especially hoses. NEVER use chemical household cleaning products in boat plumbing. Yes, it's definitely time to replace the hoses--all of 'em. Best choice for 1.5" head discharge and pumpout hose is SeaLand "OdorSafe" brand. Vent hose and toilet intake hoses: Shield or Trident #148.

Hose bulge

It was at the hose clamp so it might have kinked it?? Just bought the boat so I don't know about harsh chemicals? I don't think they were used. Thanks for the info. What a fun project to look forward to! BZ

I don't think so...

I suspect somebody cleaned out the system with Lysol or a chemical bowl cleaner. Only one hose clamp? Safety standards call for two on all sanitation system hose connections...also all fuel hoses, and any hose connected to a below-waterline thru-hull. Screws should be on opposing sides of the hose.
