New holding tanks

I recently purchased a boat that is in charter in the BVI and will be bringing it back May 2001. Unfortunately it does not have a holding tank. I understand the principals behind the installation, however the materials are the question. Specifically hoses there are the "two " seen in catalogs the regular sanitation hose at 2.50 per foot or so and the "super dooper" at $5.00+ per foot. Whis is best for a "new installation". Also what about the tank material itself, thickness, "plastic" vs steel/aluminum and what about the newer flexible Nauta or Vetus brands. Lastly , Location location location. the boat is a Moorings 510. A grand boat with lots of room but it is iffy at best to find a location NOT under a bund for the holding tank. Any & all pearls are welcome. thanks John

First, read...

the articles in the Reference Library in the Head Mstress forum. Most of your questions will be answered, including the material of choice and why you DO want to the put tank under a bunk--preferably the v-berth (unless the head is at the aft end of the cabin). The only hose I recommend is SeaLand "OdorSafe" brand hose...it's expensive at $8+/ft...but it's the only one that's bullet-proof when it comes to odor permeation. So which costs more: replacing every few years for $5/ft...or paying $8/ft once? After you've read up, I'll be glad to help you spec out your specific installation.

Getting there

Peggie, Thnkas I had read all but the "Holding tank odor - cause and cure". I understand hoses, tank material (and why) no ventless models for me and why under a bunk, if installed correctly , is ok. Heck I almost feel like "dorothy" in the Wizard of OZ. It is all clear now. BUT, there is always a but, to get a vent line from 5/8" to 1 " : 1. do they come that way or can they be "retrofitted"? I am not familiar with the catalog everyone references. 2. If the holding is to be under a bunk or in the v-berth area I am concerned about potential sloshing. Water and fuel tanks are baffled (to the best of my knowledge) has this or is this a potential problem????? Thanks again John

Baffling is rare...

in tanks under 50 gallons. Your factory installed tanks aren't baffled. And Although many people are concerned about sloshing, in 15 years in the marine plumbing biz, I've never met anyone who's actually heard a tank slosh or experienced any boat trim problems after installing an unbaffled tank. My own holding tank is under my v-berth...a long skinny 20 gallon tank that lies athwartship--so there's lots of potential for contents to shift from end to end...and I've never heard a sound from it, even when I was napping on an anchor one afternoon and was tossed around hard enough to knock a lamp off a table by some fool's wake. As for how to get a 1" vent when all the tanks in the catalogs only show 5/8"...you can install a new vent in an "off the shelf" tank using the same type of bulkhead fitting you'll also need for a 1" thru-hull...it just requires access to the inside of the tank to insert the fitting--and a rubber gasket (which you can easily make yourself) under the nut. However, all the tanks that we supply are special order, with fittings installed at the factory when the tank is made in the sizes and locations specified by the customer--eliminating the need for any "fitting relocation kits" and/or convoluted plumbing to make so-called "standard" fittings work.

orders

Peggy, All seems to make sense. Where and how do I get ahold of a catalog, (online???????) to get an idea fo what is out there, ball park costs etc. John

Does it have an unused tank?

About 2 years ago I almost bought a Moorings 510. I was told by the broker that it had the holding tank in place for the waste, but that it had never been connected. He told me that the boats were all built with the tank in place, but for BVI use, they just went directly to the thru-hulls. All I would have to do is install the plumbing to the tank. Moorings could get me a quote to have it done in BVI, cheaper than in Florida, per the Moorings broker. Now I have no idea if this is true, because the deal feel through, right before I had it surveyed. But, if you haven't had it surveyed yet, you might wait to order your tanks.

Check the Beneteau List

A second thought. I received a lot of information from the Beneteau email group out Sailnet, when I was negotiating the Moorings 510. There were at least 3 or 4 people that had bought 500's and 510's out of charter, and they were very familiar with converting from charter use. You might join, (free) and toss your questions in their direction.

existing holding tanks

I did buy the boat and did have it surveyed. No sign of tanks so far. This boat was built in France and brought over in late 1993, a 1994 model I believe. I have been in contact with Beneteau in South Carolina and they have been a great resource. No holding tanks though. I recently signed on to the Beneteau owners assoc and will look there thanks for input john
