Dear Peggy,

In preparation for the installation for my holding tank I bought and read your book and of course found it to to be a wealth of info which hopefully I have incorporated into my design. However I have a few clarification questions which I would like to ask. I apologize in advance if they have been covered elsewhere and I have just not found the answers.

Here goes:

Vents: I plan to use two 1" vents. Is their relative location on top of the tank critical and, if so, where should they be located relative to one another?

I read that the outlets should be as near as possible with as straight a run of pipe as possible. However I also read that a good place to locate an inlet/outlet is in the bow. My tank is going to be right next to my head just aft of the v-berth. Is the bow a good place given that its about 8' or so away. Where should I locate the other? How about the transom even though that's 26' or so away? What type of thruhull shold I use for these?

In order to avoid permeation problems is it OK to use PVC pipe for the bulk of the runs with PVC to provide relative flex where required?

Is there a type of shutoff or Y valve that I can buy that would thread into the bottom of the tank so I can shut it off when not in use?

I plan to configure the system with the bottom of the tank 6" to 8" above static waterline to enable me to gravity empty the tank when legal. Is the much head adequate to empty the tank without a macerator?

Many thanks for any input you can provide.

Tim.
