New Head Treatment?

I heard about a new type of head treatment that sounds like it can make up for the lack of ventilation to the holding tank. It contains phosphates(?) that will replace oxygen in the tank lost through aerobic bacteria action (assuming your holding tank is not getting enough through proper ventilation). This is supposed to encourage the aerobic (good, non smelly) bacteria. Does anyone know more about this type of product? Peggy?

Sounds like Odorlos...

Which is a Swedish product, but not particularly new. And it works by introducing NITRATES into the tank contents. Nitrogen "extracts" oxygen from organic matter, and since odor cannot occur in the presence of oxygen, it suppresses odor. It does work. However, unlike bacteria which multiply and continually replenish themselves, the oxygen generated by the nitrates exhausts itself and is "diluted" as the tank fills up, so more must be added to stay ahead of the odor-causing bacteria.. But in systems that don't get enough oxygen for live bacteria to work, Odorlos is the best alternative available.

Odorlos works great on the P42

We tried KO but bad ventilation. Unable to improve it. Tried Odorlos and have used it for two summers. Works great. No odors. Have to add it every Sunday when closing up boat, but when you come down the next weekend, no ordors whatsoever. It also keeps sludge from building up in the tank.

Thanks!

Great info! I usually have little trouble with a smelly head, but every now & then it gets full, doesn't get pumped out right away, and cause a "stinky" cockpit when flushed.. This product (ordolos) sounds like it might be the right occasional supplement to help those good critters win the battle of breaking down waste! One more question Peggy...Your products mention not to use other additives in conjunction to your product (K.O.), could this be an exception?

Odorlos won't hurt K.O., but....

using both is a "belt and suspenders" approach...use the one that works best for you.
