The head tanks on our P450 are made of aluminum. Fortunately, the forward tank is not used much and is readly accessible. However, the rear tank is heavily used and not accessible. The tank has developed a heavy crust on the bottom and I suspect a leak. The options that require a new tank are all going to require heavy construction. Is there anything else I can do to address the sludge and determine if I have a leak?

Shawn....From personal experience....

your in for it..Our 430 had the same problem. If the crud is light colored and kida flakey it most likely is aluminum. Personally I would make plans to replace it and not disturb it until it's time to remove it. Peggy has a book with replacement poly tanks. If there isn't one that fits, which was the case for our 430, you can get the plans from Hunter and have a poly one made by a company in Chicago. I'm on the road right now and don't have access to my personal computer, but I'll monitor the thread and send the address when I return on Monday if you need it. Dick McKee S/V Constellaton

Oh my!!

Thanks for the information. I was affraid that was going to be the answer to the problem. I was wondering how you got your tank out of the 430. It looks like I am going to have to cut ours out.

Shawn..ther is an easlier way..

If there is a next time for us I'm gona order a custom tank. Our tank was only 1" too wide to be removed without cutting. If I order a custom tank 1" narrower it will slip in with no cutting of the glass around the tank. I'll only loose about 1/2 gal capacity. I'll then just cut the old tank rather than the boat to remove it. If you'll send your e-mail address to McKee119@hotmail.com or call at 702-458-3400 after 6 I'll get you the information.. Easier than custom--and a LOT less expensive

Our main tank vendor for more than years was Ronco Plastics. They make TOP quality, extra thick-walled plastic tanks and have more than 400 shapes and sizes to choose from--including over 100 that are non rectangular...their prices are VERY reasonable, and they'll install fittings in the sizes and locations you specify when they build your tank. Drawings for most of their tanks are on their website at www.ronco-plastics.com.

Peggy yur absolutely correct...

unfortunately Hunter came up with the most odd shaped area to place the aft holding tank on the 450/430. I could find nothing even close in the Ronco listing you were kind enough to send to me. If the forward tank goes (I guess it's just a matter of time) however, they have a perfect drop in replacement. The custom tanks is about 3x as expensive as the production tank.. Dick McKee

Dick, try to find another location

Even if it means giving up a drawer...you'll replace the storage with the empty space the old tank occupied. Just 'cuz Hunter (or any other builder) puts a tank in a particular spot doesn't mean that's the only place you can put one. In fact, I can almost always find a much better location for it than most boat builders do.

Thats a good point

we had only owned the boat about 2 weeks when the problem occurred, and U know, were very anxous to get it done..It does make sence to look elsewhere espically with as much space unused under to floorboard as there is

Hunter to the Rescue

I appreciate all of your comments and suggestions on fixing my Head Tank. I completely agree that a custom poly tank is the way to go. However, Hunter contacted me and volunteered to send me the correct tanks for both the front and rear holding tanks. Apparently, they have switched to plastic holding tanks in their newer boats. I just can't say enough about Hunter. I didn't even contact them. They (Eddy Breeden) took the initiative to make sure that my problems were addressed. Yeah, I know I sound like an advertisement. But when was the last time a manufacturer ever contacted you to volunteer to help you out!!!!
