Hello all, I am completley rebuilding my mast on my catalina 27 and I am still new to sailing and such. I want to replace my halyards to all line instead of the combination cable and line. what is the replacement diameter of line that is appropriate for my boat? Thanks Dana

5/16, 78 or 82 ft. depnding on rig,

according to the rigging page I've put in the link below, it is from the owners manual on the website www.catalina27.org this is the owners association and you can find most of what you need here. You will probably need to replace the masthead sheaves which may be sized for wire & not rope, also the Catalina Factory can be contacted on their website www.catalinayachts.com and a large supplier of parts for the smaller boats is www.catalinadirect.com.

Taylor, I'll make this as short as possible. The masthead sheaves are not large enough to accept anything larger that a 1/4 inch line. The masthead unit will not accept larger sheaves. There is a diagram of the masthead fitting, with specs, available on the C27 website. So if you want to go all rope without changing the whole masthead, the simple solution is to build "tapered" halyards. What is a tapered halyard? Go to www.apsltd.com for some explanations and prices. My solution was using 80 ft of 3/16 tech-12 as a core. It has good UV resistance and is easy over the sheaves and is stronger than wire. The core is covered by 40 ft of 5/16 Samson LS. The cover is on the back half of the halyard and adds no strength to the line, it simply provides easier handling and better cleating. I did all the splicing myself, information available on the Samson website, it was really a fun project. My boat is in Marina Village-Mission Bay, if you have any questions please feel free to call or e-mail. joe@joefordhomes.com

You can purchase rope sheaves for your masthead and, for that matter, high modulus (low stretch) rope halyards from Catalina Direct (www.catalinadirect.com). I did it on my old C27. You will need to have the mast down. The main and jib halyard sheaves run on common axles (there are two for each halyard) so you can't go up the mast on one halyard and swap the other cause you won't be able to pull the axle pins without ending up back on deck in a big hurry. There is no need to fool around making tapered halyards. The Catalina Direct sheaves fit fine and are made for the synthetic halyard sizes required.

dana, $40 is a lot to pay

for a sheave. You can buy them from CatalinaYachts parts for $8.40 apiece. My total cost for building a tapered halyard was $78 including eye thimble, ordered rope from Annapolis Performance Sailing. Making an eyesplice in single braid is very easy compared to double braid. A word of advice, shop around. CatalinaDirect has some one off parts, but a lot of their parts can be purchased direct from Catalina factory or Garhaurer Marine for substantially less.

Wow 40 bucks

Joe is correct. When I did mine they were plain bearing delrin (i think) sheaves and about $10 a piece. $40 and torlon ball bearings is real serious overkill for a Cat 27. Try to find the plain sheaves. If you keep the outside halyards you are going to have to pay $160 for four sheaves which is a ridiculous price.

yes $40 is alot to pay for new halyards.

Joe thanks for the good advice. yes i agree torlon ball bearings are an overkill for my boatand to much to pay. Catalina direct also sells a $14.00 replacement sheave witch is listed below. Thanks for the info on other sources to look i will try these for the best price. Product #: H1416 OEM sheave. Plastic with stainless steel bushing for 5/16" line. 2" OD x 5/16" x .413".
