Hey Everyone, It's time to replace my halyards and I'm wondering if I should try to find the rope/wire kind or if I should switch to all rope. If I do then will I have to replace the sheaves at the top of the mast? I'd rather not have to go through all of the effort & expense if I don't have to, but I'm having trouble finding the old style halyards. Do they still make them?? Thanks, Allen Schweitzer s/v Drambuie C-30 Hull# 632

Wire to rope halyards...

Defender.com ..... Sailnet.com... westmarine.com ...aspltd.com .... etc. all sell them or make them. go to catalinayachts.com to access customer service info. They will ever sell one to you.

Modern low-stretch

Allen, Modern low-stretch like NER Sta-Set-X can be used instead of wire/rope, and on my C36 the sheaves fork fine - no need to change. Only drawback is that the outside of the Sta-Setx-X is slippery, and I have a hard time getting a grip on it, even with leather palm gloves. jv

To John:

John, So your all rope halyards fit the narrow sheaves originally designed for wire? What sized line did you go with? All I know is that the current wire/line halyards don't allow the "line" portion to go through the sheaves. It would be great to be able to go with all line. Let me know what you think. --Allen

To Allen

You know, Allen, I may have spoken too soon. Mine is a C36, and the original sheaves work fine with the StaSet-X halyards. The size is 7/16". Your C30 has a different mast head box, so the sheaves may indeed be different. I spliced shackled onto the ends using stainless thimbles. You can't just tie a shackle on, or tie onto the sail, since the strength of knots in this stuff is very low. It must be eye-spliced.
