Hunter 34 Green Bay
I just purchased a 1984 Hunter 34. One of many projects on my list is to replace the gray carpet lining the walls of the interior. It currently has some mold and mildew. I'm working on finding and resolving the leaks (e.g. mast, portals, etc.) first. Has anyone discovered an attractive, workable and perhaps easier to clean alternative to carpet? Thanks!

Also considered the same.

Tim: I had also consider the same thing with the planking. Actually I do not think it would be that difficult if one was comfortable with placing firing strips on the inside of the hull. These could be attached with epoxy and then the strips could be attached with either screws or a nail gun using s.s. nails. Fortunately or unfortunately I have sold the boat and this is no longer an issue. I would have used ash planking and 3/4" plywood fir strips. This would also allow for some foam insulation unit the strips too.

have vinyl headliners, much like Hunter uses now. Also, you can buy it directly from Hunter. As I recall, it was a good price too.

try bleach

I used a 50/50 dilution of bleach and water in a spray bottle and it worked well. Did not bleach out the color but removed the mold/mildew stain. It's worth a try, worst case is you replace the liner anyway, right?

Nice Galley!

Nice job on the Galley Eric! Do you have other pictures of your interior upgrades? That'll give me inspiration.

Carpet for your H34

Mark, any auto body paint/upholstery supplier has footwell carpet that actually conforms to the shape of the pattern/mold. Spray some 3M adhesive to tack it down, apply the carpet, trim the excess. No experience in a marine environment, but if it works on floorboards, I'd guess that it's fine with moisture/mold/mildew, etc. Anyway, it's cheap if you ever feel the desire to replace it.

Nice Job

Uh oh, that was my task for this winter - replace a part of the sole and some of the cabinetry around the icebox due to some water damage. That looks really nice Eric - I especially like the headliner. That is pretty impressive. You and Fred should go into the boat remodeling business (is there such a thing?).
