S2 8.6 Seattle
Not sure if I'm posting this in the right area of the S2 forums. I'm just learning my way around your forum. I just wanted to say hello and kind of introduce myself.

New guy here...and boy am I glad to find you folks. I read a lot of the S2 questions and answers and you folks are a wealth of knowledge and info.

I bought my first sailboat 2 years ago, thinking I'll finally get to learn a little about sailing and of course boat maintenance. I had nooooo idea.

Of course my old 8.6 has lots of things to fix. The last owner neglected her pretty good. After I got her I took her to the boat yard to get quotes on fixing some things and figured out pretty quickly...uh oh. Imma have to learn about working on boats. I've started out with some fairly easy things and I'm building confidence, but harder things await me. Things like rotted knee braces. The list is long, so stuff like a non functioning head or stove have been placed low on the priority list and work arounds like empty milk jugs and camp stoves get me by.

With the knowledge I see here and my slowly gaining confidence (I'm kind of a mechanical idiot), I think I'm going to be able to do more work on this boat than I ever would have thought possible.

Don't get me wrong. I had discussions with the surveyor before buying and I read about S2s, so I think I've got a good old boat that's worth the effort of bringing back up to shape. She looks pretty good as is, is getting better all the time (just refinished most of the brightwork this summer), and she's a ton of fun. I think I got a good boat to learn on.

Of course, now my dreams are also getting bigger. Right now I sail the puget sound and the San juans, but can see myself doing some coastal cruising, as in to Mexico, as my skills grow. Although I don't know if that would be in my little 8.6 or if the years will see me in a different boat as I'm learning a little about different boats.

Anyway, super glad to be here, and as time goes on I might be pestering you with questions.

Thanks,
Michael

Welcome aboard Micahel. You're right, this forum has a tremendous amount of knowledge. All you have to do is ask.

Keep working to make that dream come true.
