Installing new gages on the H280 above the companion way, I got the holes drilled this after noon.

My question is does anyone know were this piece of PVC goes too? My bore scope is 2 inches short. Ain't that been the story of my whole life.

...

Thx million for your help.

1) Got an electrician's fish tape ?
2) No ? Crimp a bunch of coat hangers together so they behave like a thin solid rod.
3) Tie/tape a white piece of cloth on the end going in first.
4) Turn off all power which may be in the ceiling
5) Feed it through the piece of PVC until it won't go any further and stops.

Now please tell me you've got another removeable plate in your cabin ceiling where you can stick a mirror and flashlight in and see if you can find the piece of white cloth. It will lead you to where you want to run your wiring.

Ain't that been the story of my whole life.
My deepest condolences.

Ralph,
Got an electrician's fish tape ? Yes I do and an 8' fish pole. I also have nylon pull line.

Feed it through the piece of PVC until it won't go any further and stops. I did the fish pole and my bore scope today. The fish pole hits something on the other end not sure what. The bore scope appear to show a void.

Now please tell me you've got another removeable plate in your cabin ceiling where you can stick a mirror and flashlight in and see if you can find the piece of white cloth. It will lead you to where you want to run your wiring. It was late, I was cold and call it a day. I really did not feel like pulling the breaker panel out ot the over head and look.

I do have a plan B for pulling the wiring. I am hoping that I stumbled upon something.

When working on a boat that presents mysteries, I revert to SWAG'ing.
You went down the tube into a void. Your probe went in till it stopped.

Using the length of the probe at the point it stops when inserted in the tube, I would try to lay the probe along the outside of the tube in the cabin to see where the probe length matches up with possible barriers built into the boat like a bulkhead. The builder then had to follow the bulkhead (turn the wires 90º) There may be a near by opening that will let you hook the wires and pull them the next bit.

Is there any visible raised path to the radio console up on the ceiling? I recall some sort of tunnels going across the boat up there, but not sure about back to the spray hood…but that is where I would look.

Sounds like a good idea, sitting here in my armchair :dancing:.
Of course, a more direct route (as I did mine many years ago) is lead your three sensor signals directly to the gauge compartment as you've shown above and then run one single 12V wire through the PVC and up to the compartment and do your connections in there.

So here is todays update;

New gage/instrument compartment.

Dropped the circuit breaker panel to access the electrical compartment. What a rats nest.

There is a PVC pipe in the electrical compartment.

The PVC in the electrical compartment had a good 1" to 1 1/2" Silicone/RTV plug in it that has been removed. My arms look like a gave the cat a bath from working thru the circuit breaker panel cutout.

Bad news first..... The 2 PVC pipes (that's correct I said 2) are not connected and the one from the cockpit is lower than the one from the electrical compartment and it extends under it.

The good news.... I did get a butt load of pictures of my mast wiring. Maybe I can figure out what switch the spreader lights are wired into, because you know it is not labeled.

Thx a million for suggestions and encouragement.

Thank you for all the great info.

My thought has been to run the Sea Talk ng back to here and make those connections. In the electrical compartment I will pick up power and the wind sensor. I will then run the backbone into the battery compartment and pick up depth and speed. This will be a good place to pick up engine monitoring if I do that upgrade in the future.

Take your shop vac and blow about 25 feet of yarn into that tube then go look for the yarn where you can hear/feel the air escaping.
What a great idea. If I dont not use it this time I will keep it in my toolbox.

Yes, there is a 3"x2" channel that runs down from the electrical compartment. The is a huge electrical junction box behind the false wall in the closet on the port side. I plan on using the one on the port or stbd drop to pick up the depth and speed sensors.

Long ago, I worked with an another electrician who would blow his cigar smoke into that pipe.

Think positive. You now know where two pipes lead. I wonder. Were there working gauges in the holes before you began this project? If not perhaps the PO just got frustrated.

You know this is why every captain taking command of a Ship/boat always looks into every void or space before signing the paperwork taking on the responsibility for the ship/boat.

I think Crusty put those holes in the spray hood.

I had instruments there on my H280, but I didn’t install them, so couldn’t give too much help. Other than an old photo .
