New forestay and length (appears too long)

Just purchased a new forestay form the Hunter site. For a Hunter 26.
Upon installing it, it appears to be too long.
It is the correct length according to the manual however...
I could make it work by tightening down on the aft side stays (the one that goes through the spreaders), but then the mast base wont seat all the way down in the front on the base plate on the top of the boat. (In other words the mast would be slightly leaning back at the base. (I'm not talking about mast rake here).
I will note that I have the aft side stays extended out as far as they will go to make the mast base sit flat on the base plate. In doing this the forestay turnbuckle must be taken up completely and even then is not quite tight enough...

to make sure I'm thinking correctly wouldn't the aft side stays affect how far forward the mast was allowed to go? and the front side stay (the short one) shouldn't affect it going forward as much. Am I thinking correctly?

any advise or help?

Dave I sent you a p.m.

What boat do you have - is it a fractional rig? If the "front" shroud is the inner (or lower) and goes from the chain plate direct to the mast (probably just below the spreader) that pair really only adjusts the side to side curve of the mast after you have tensioned the upper (or outer) shrouds - at least on my H23.

Are you talking about 3.5”? On the hunter 26 bow you have a U-bolt that the front stay attaches. On some hunters the U-bolt also has an adjustment tang. If yours is one of those try taking the tang off and attaching directly to the U-bolt.

I assume you have an eye fitting roll swaged at the top. If so, and it turns out you really do need to shorten the stay, you may be able to get away with replacing the eye with a swageless (removable) eye fitting. If you cut the stay immediately below the swaged eye fitting, it is possible that the attachment of the swageless eye (e.g., StaLok) might make it the right length. Attaching the swageless fitting is something you can do yourself. These are not cheap, so it may in fact be less expensive to order a whole new stay with both ends swaged.
