Nonsuch Ultra 30 Gulfport, FL
After sailing for quite while I have decided to sail the easy way for the rest of my sailing career. Hence, good bye IP 27 and welcome Hinterhoeller Nonsuch 30 U. Gone are certain words from my vocabulary such as "ready about" and let's take in the headsail. I guess I won't be clicking on to Don Ouelette's forum either. oh well, I'll post some pictures shortly. Are there any other Nonsuch owners out there?

Sweet boats and very well built. Just be careful jibing... that's a HUGE sail...;)

Nonsuch has its own owners association though there are a few members here who own them....

Maine Sail,

Thanks for the good words. I'm sure you agree that with a 540 sq. foot main there is nothing wrong with a 270 degree turn.

Have you considered the Wyliecat 30? A similar rig setup but much faster. I love this boat and have thought many times about buying one.

You'll still need "ready about" but it'll be a lot less "work." Know you'll enjoy it, great boats.

I had the Nonsuch 30 ultra 20 years ago while living on Long Island. Sailed it from Mass. ,Block Island,Conn. etc. Great boat, well made and designed. So much room for it's size. Best wishes to enjoy you new boat.

Congrats on your purchase! I have been sailing a 30 Classic for a number of years. Wonderful boat! Unfortunately, the design is constantly being rubbished by a number of detractors who know nothing of the boat other than it is not conventional. So ignore the few and enjoy your effortless cruising!

Cheers,

Bob

Congratulations on selecting such a great boat. I suggest you read "Dangerous Waters" by David Philpott. He learned a lot about his Nonsuch 30 during his ill fated round the world trip that are very transportable to your boat - if you will be sailing very far off shore. Even if you are not, it is a very interesting book.

Nonsuches are great boats. Well built and roomy. They have a modern underbody and along with the huge sail, they perform quite well and are quite solid and stiff. They have a halyard to raise the sail, a sheet to trim it and a choker to flatten or loosen the foot achieving a similar effect as an outhaul. All done from the cockpit. The Ultra was a variation on the original boat and so has some additional niceties to it. These boats are a dream to work on because their lockers are huge and you can get into places to work on them. Mark Ellis did a great job designing them and they were well built by George Hinterhoeler in Canada. The original boats had a spun aluminum mast, but I believe later generations, before they went under (fire in the factory), they used carbon fibre masts. You won't go wrong. They built Nonsuches in many sizes: 22, 26, 30, 33 and 36, I believe. All with quality workmanship and I never heard a Nonsuch owner complain about the product.

I chartered a 30 in the BVI. I had trouble raising the main and found it a struggle. Perhaps my technique needed tweaking. I also had trouble sailing it upwind until someone told me to trim the main more like a jib going upwind, which, of course, is not trimmed center line like a main may be. This helped a lot. It was a nice boat that tracked like a dream.

off shore?

I have always been intriged by these boats. Are they off shore capable? Would it be a boat you could cruise along the Eastern Caribbean?
