Our club has a Hunter 26.5 and are considering replacing the original Yamaha 9.9 HP engine. Any recommendations? The old engine seems pretty heavy for this boat. Can we get by with a smaller one?
IIRC, the 26.5 is a pretty beefy boat. Tohatsu makes an 8hp w/ electric start that weighs in at about 85-90 lbs. Not sure I'd want to go smaller than that unless it is a race-only boat in protected waters.
Tohatsu 8 hp and 9.8 hp are the same base engine so weights are quite close. If the boat handles the Yamaha it will have no trouble with the 9.8 Tohatsu.
