In preperation of cruising my opulant 44 year old, 24' luxury yacht (old boat that keeps me out of the bars) around the Indian River Lagoon and to a couple of already scheduled raft ups I've been looking for a dinghy. My boat draws 2' 9" and I can't get anyone to wade in crotch deep water down here in the winter. Come to think of it I don't like it either.
Found a Water Tender 9.4 on Craigslist with a 30lb Minn Kota troller and paid $270 for both. Boat has a few scratches but otherwise in great shape. The motor is an unknown but I'll check it out tomorrow.
I have a bum leg and back and am a mite heftier than I used to be and so wanted a larger, more stable dinghy than I'm used to (8' fiberglass, shallow v hull). I want to be able to haul 3 adults at a time and really don't anticipate my passengers (usually) being runway models. Yhe shallow tri hull and wide beam on this dink should help.
The boat has great moulded in seating but no storage. I have a couple of small hatches I'll fit into the aft seat (one side for a battery) and will pick up something for the middle seat. This will mean that the void between the liner and hull will no longer be water tight so I might need to add a drain plug in the normal drain plug position. PDFs and other required gear will have to be in a bag which will make for easy loading and unloading anyway.
I have a red/green for the bow and a surface mount stern light that I replaced on other boats and a set of 2 part aluminum oars from an inflatable I sold rather than watch it rot. Glad I rarely throw anything away!
I'll launch tomorrow, anyone want to go for a dinghy ride?

I think the round ones will work for the center seat. The ones I have are like the rectangular plastic ones on that page.
Thanks Donalex! Now I should figure out how to put nulkheafs in there to keep the stored items in place. Maybe glue in some plastic panels?
When I complained that I couldn't dance anymore my wife told me that I never could in the first place!

Oh Oh

:D Sounds like someones got 2 LEFT feet

Happy sailing, we are looking for a dink as well, as we've found at least a mooring for our boat for next year and if lucky maybe a slip.

Brina

PS I've seen drop in compartments and lids in various sizes sold in some of the catalogues that I have and they come in a number of differing sizes so you could install them and still maintain the air flotation chamber as designed originally.

Re: Oh Oh

Hi Brina!
If you don't mind and have a minute, could you let me know the names of the companies that sell those compartments?
I was thinking about building a dinghy if I couldn't find what I wanted at a reasonable price. This worked out better for me as I have work work and home projects to do before our decent weather gets here.
but I always THOUGHT I could dance....

Hi Merlin,

Here is a link to the site. I can verify for them as I buy quite a bit of stuff from them for our boat via one of their dealers in Halifax.

You'll find maybe what your looking for on page 106. They may have other sizes or maybe you could try Defender as well.

I'm sure you can dance but maybe just Left handed circles :D.

Happy sailing,
Brina

Yeah, I swim in circles now too.:)
Thanks Brina. I'll check these things out.
Oh, the motor works and the boat floats- now I'll have to put the 2 together and go for a ride.

You might want to take a look at these

as a way to have access and to maintain water tight integrity. The cam latch ones should be water tight. I am going to install two in my cockpit seats and two in over my cockpit lockers so that I can have access down into my quarter berths which I cannot get to now because I am not married to a runway model and I am not one myself.

Here is the one that I am going to install in my cockpit seats.

Thanks Tom.
As it turns out the boat isn't watertight, I had it in the yard (PO kept in garage) and a cup or so of rain wated got in between the liner and hull must have been thry the hull/deck joint.
That hatch looks like it would fit the bill for my center seat.

Hi Merlin,

Hope the motor and dingy worked well together for you. Its to rain all weekend so I guess I will not get the cockpit sole finished off this weekend :(. I am also thinking of making a plywood jig up to bend 7/8'' stainless tubing for my cockpit railings and solar panel support.

Very cool Brina, post pics of your work please!
Is your weather turning cool yet? We're still over 90.
Got busy with a project that I had previously set aside and haven't had my dinghy ride yet but will soon.

Took the dinghy for a ride and the little trolling moter does push it but slowwwwly, except for in the highest speed where it is going about 3 kts. Might have been my wife's Yorkie weighing the boat down too much. Yeah, that's it.
It's really light and will take some getting used to.
I'll charge the battery back up, trim the motor and send out my crash test kids next to see what they think.
