The old companion way pin boards on my H22 where getting in sad shape. The original boards where made from plywood with a teak veneer finish. I looked at building the new pin boards with teak plywood again or teak. I went to a local woodworking shop to select some lumber. Teak was $28/board foot. The owner of the woodworking shop recommended that I use a lumber called Ipe. He said he had sold Ipe to a number of satisfied boat owners as a teak substitute. Only Ipei costs $3/board foot. A friend with a whole lot more experience in woodworking did most of the work with my assistance. I could not be happier with the new companion way... especially the cost. From a webpage on Ipe "Ipe (pronounced “ee-pay”) is a large tropical hardwood tree that grows abundantly throughout Central and South America. Ipe wood is prized for its durability, strength, and its natural resistance to decay, wet conditions, and insect infestation."

Nice looking

companionway you and your friend constructed. What finish did you select? I will consider ipe when I get to that stage of my rehab. Lamar

Cetol

I used Cetol marine. The folks at Cetol do not recommend Cetol for a hardwood like Ipe. However, there are folks who have had very good experience with Cetol on Ipe so I decided to go with Cetol.
