I'm new to sailing and Catalina Sail Boats. And like any novice I have a hundred and forty-seven questions. I don't plan on listing all 147 right now but to start with I was curious about the best way to change the oil in in 14 hp universal enigine on her. Is it best to have someone who is familiar with the universal do it or can a non mechanical type like myself figure it out?

Got my pump at Home Depot
Hi Jack. I bought a drill powered fluid pump from Home Depot. Also picked up some hose, and a few fittings to connect to the drain hose coming from the bottom of the oil pan. All in all I think it was under $25 in parts. Another option is a commercially available oil change pump thingy that goes down the dipstick hole and sucks the oil out. Just remember to run the motor for a few minutes before changing the oil. Warm oil flows a lot easier and a lot faster. This should be the perfect job to gain familiarity with your motor. One warning: I remember a post here some time ago where someone tried filling their oil through the coolant filler. Don't do this

I have a c27 and I'm learning to do my own maintance.The oil boy works great. It's only about 40 dollars. You should also change the transmison fluid.easy to do , check the archives for helpful information

some engines are fitted with a hose that is attached to the regular drain plug on the bottom of the motor. it is long enough to pull up so you can insert a pump hose through it. this is so much easier than inserting it through the dipstick tube. this is kind of bizarre, but i used to change the oil in my thirty footer at night with the shades pulled, without clothes. the first time i changed the oil i ended up with the stuff all over me and my clothes. after that i decided i did not need to mess up my clothes.....good luck

although changing the oil is pretty easy, the first time I had a diesel mechanic do it while I watched. I also wanted him to show me other parts of the engine and explain a few things to me. next time Ill do it myself but, watching him and having him there to answer all my questions as well as replace my packing gland was worth it!

check for a drain hose
Jack, I have the same engine and it has a drain hose that runs from the bottom of the oil pan. Lookmunder the engine & see if you have one. If you do, it is a simple matter of leading the hose to a point lower than the oil pan, unscrewing the bolt in the end of the hose and draining it into a gallon jug. Warm up the engine before you attempt this becasue the oil drains slowly from this hose, even when warm. It is a very easy job. Engine holds about 2.5 quarts. I have had great luck with Shell Rotella 15W-40, made for diesel engines. Engine starts much easier than with 30w, especially in the winter. Wal-Mart carries it as well and the filter, which is Fram #3593. Hope this helps. Steve W.

oilboy works well
I bought a cheaper pump from WestMarine and tired to chagne my oil. What a mistake! Exxon Valdez. I threw the old pump away and bought the Oilboy which worked well.
