I'm the proud new owner of a 1974 Catalina 22. The boat is in great shape for being 32 years old - I've sailed on it a few times and am pleased to own it now. It's currently in my driveway and I'm getting it ready for winter in Bellingham. I'd love some advice on what to do. Here's what I've done: 1. I've emptied everything out of it and stored all the lines, cushions, and gear in a warm, dry place. 2. Hung the rudder, mast, and the boom in my garage after greasing all the turnbuckles on the shrouds and stays. 3. Hosed off the boat and trailer and cleaned off some stray mussels and weeds. 4. Nestled the keel into the rubber groove on the trailer so that pressure is off the winch. 5. Probably some other stuff that I've forgotten. Now, some questions/stuff I need to do. 1. What have I forgotten? 2. I was planning on wiping down the hull with a soft nylon brush that attaches to the hose. Should I do something more, like pressure wash the hull? Or will that obliterate the bottom paint? 3. I'm still figuring out how to keep the boat covered. I have enough tarp to cover it all up, but I’m planning on building a gizmo using PVC to keep the tarp from touching the boat as much as possible. I have a little convection heater for the cabin. Thanks a ton for any advice! Love to connect with any local Catalina 22 ownwers in Bellingham for tips. This is my first boat! –Andy

You should flush your plumbing galley and head if you have eather with a nontoxic brand of Antifreeze. West Marine sells it, also the outboard needs stuff done to. Im not really sure what because im on the way to Florida but its worth looking into.

keel

You should be lowering the keel to the rubber pad when you put the boat on the trailer, if your not doing this your stressing the hull and it will develop stress cracks that will leak, you get the picture, soon your cockpit floor will be absorbing water etc... I have a friend that's facing this very repair soon. You might consider waxing the hull, it will make it much easier when spring cleaning comes around. Check out the website for a couple of PVC support poles for covering, of course there is lots of other interesting things there as well. Good luck

Snow

Two stroke engine, use fogging oil, read the instructions, make sure you run the engine in water. 4 stroke engine, drain the carb or use a fuel stabilizer. Covering the boat for snow. You must build a structure to tent the tarp so the snow does not lay on the tarp and build up as heavy ice thus pulling in your lifelines from all the weight, pvc will work

Use the mast as the tent top

Run the mast from the front pulpit to a stand in the back to act as the top of the tarp tent you'll be putting up. Just like in the photo in the previous reply. Your mast does not have to be stored inside. Neither does the boom. Also, you don't need to run a heater. Once you have removed the cushions, etc the inside will be fine. Don't seal the tarp too tight, let the whole thing breathe a bit. Remember, most boats spend their entire lives outside uncovered.
