Just thought I would brag a little about the new cabin on my 22. Only thing wrong is that I did not know when I began that there was the space in the V-berth for using the porta-potty. I just took cushions on the boat and made plywood backs and stapled on new fabric. Then I realized my mistake. So who cares anyhow? Next step is to take out the step and consol housing a sink and unusable ice chest (?) under the hatch and make a wooden storage locker and include a coleman propane stove. Anybody with other suggestions?

Looks Great

You have done a great job. Can you post some close up photos of the work you have done on the starboard bulkhead?

starboard bulkhead

Thanks Bud for the kind words. Actually have done nothing to either exterior bulkhead. Have been trying to decide how to handle the backrest that Hunter put on each side. I feel that Hunter did all this stuff in order to make the boat a Cruiser instead of a day sailer. I just want to make it comfortable for an occasional overnighter. Any ideas? Would love to see other work!

upholstery

Did you do the upholstery yourself? If so, how hard was it? I really need to redo all my cushions, and I would hate to pay someone else to do something for my boat if it's a job I should be able to do.

Actually wasn't difficult once I realized that I didn't really need to sew the whole thing. I simply cut out 1/4" plywood in the shape of the cushion then cut the fabric about 6" larger all around and stapled it over the plywood. Did all cushions in a day.

Word of Caution with Propane

Great job on the interior. Always store the propane canister outside the cabin and take care of the hoses as well as having good ventilation when using the stove. Propane is heavier than air and it will settle into low lying areas like your bilge. A spark of any sort can ignite it and cause bad things to happen. Also the propane will displace oxygen and cause asphyxiation. Have you thought about an alcohol burning stove? They are a lot more user friendly. Jonathan Costello Heeling Powers

Butane Stove fits in Ice chest area.

Great Boat. Post some pictures under H22. I do 95% of my cooking outside and I found that I like the Butne style much better. It's low profile let's it fit in the built in Ice chest along with a small pot and coffe cup suger and creamer. Flip the Lid and I am ready to cook. In really bad weather I have used it inside. I got mine cheap at Target. It has an electric starter so no matches. around $30 http://www.vhoutfitters.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=5&idproduct=331

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
Kenyon

I was able to get a kenyon stove (alcohol type) as a scratch and dent from the company. It cost me $10 and $5 in shipping. It is safe and dependable. Definately worth looking into.

another uphostery question

Did you use foam of greater thickness and squeeze it down to the desired size or did you just go with the finished size?

Upholstery

Kingprawn, As far as I know, it was the original in the cabin. The buttons were in the original because of a V shaped piece on the cushion that would go under the knee to lessen the hard feel of the deck under. In the V Berth, it may not have been original since it isn't configured the same, with the knee space for the porta poty. Just some 4" stuff. That's what I'll use to make back rests for the cabin and take out at least one of the narrow back rests supplied by Hunter to make storage space and fill the space created by the deck above. Butane Stove

Steve, Thanks for the tip. I just ordered one of those stoves. I love the small size and the case it's in. BTW where in atlanta are you. I'm at Aqualand. George

Thanks all

Thanks all for the kind words and advice. I have a great respect for this site. I've gotten good advice on several occasions. I bought the 22 without knowing exactly what I was doing except that it floated and the price was under book. It has been sort of a fun project even though it's a 2 hour round trip to visit it.

Would Allatoona Lake be closer?

You say you travel 2 hours to your boat. Just wondering where you live and if Allatoona would be closer. We have a great club. www.sailswsc.org

Allatoona

Steve, Allatoona may be closer, but Lanier is larger and has fewer motor craft, or so I'm told. I live in Roswell, so am almost in the middle. There are marinas on this side of Lanier, but are either more expensive or don't have facilities for sail boats. Actually is about 50 minutes each way.

Allatoona verse Lanier

George, I live off Wade Green so I am about 10 minutes from the marina, Harbor Town. Moter boats have only been a problem on Holidays. We have several members who used to have boats at Lanier and they say just the opposite about the number of boats. Allatoona may be smaller but it takes over an hour for me to moter either direction from our marina. I have been here going on 3 years and parts of the lake I have not been on. Looks smaller on a map because of all the turns. We are in a nice wide L-shaped area.

Something to aspire to

I just pick-up a 81' H22 for a buck. So your work has inspired me. I was wondering how you bonded the other support for the new electrical panel and are you running two batteries as I have no shore power at Aqualand.

Allatoona

Steve, It may have been worth my while, but I just paid for a year at Aqualand. That's the only way you can contract for a slip. I sort of wish I had checked! Oh well! To late now!

Interior teak

Mike, interior is just oak, I believe, Surely not teak! I just stained it to get rid of the old streaks from water stains so it's darker than it was. Had some rot on the deck, so I had to scab on a piece of 1/4 inch birch and put on the trim to hide the transition. Then there were speakers mounted into the bulkhead. That's why the sort of frame there with the clock and barometer. I think it all worked out OK. Still trying to take care of a couple of leaks.
