The November issue of Cruising World magazine has a new review of the Catalina 310. Most of the points made match my experience, except I think they may be mistaken about the engine HP rating.

They also talk about the Hull speed being 8knts !?

That can't be correct can it? I thought the theoretical hull speed was closer to 6.9knts. I have the Cat 36MKII and its theoretical Hull speed is 7.4knts. I don't now where they came up with that number but I think they meant to say "7knts". Maybe they should make a correction. All sorts of people might be purchasing that boat thinking its a 'rocket' when it really can't hit that speed. ps. Now, I do know, that these sailboats in theory can plane a *little* so at times with the winds strong and the seas right you can exceed 7knts, but that should not be promoted or advertised unless its fairly easy to achieve.

I thought I was just slow!

Actually, I forgot to mention the speed error. My 310 gets about 7.1 knots at the top end, motor or sail, as measured by DGPS. An additional point on waterline length. I'm not sure where Catalina measures at to get a 26.5' LWL, but I measure 29' from stem to transom just below the bootstripe. The lower edge of the transom sits an inch above the water at rest and is submerged at speed.
