I'm about to embark on my first bottom coat paint job. I've been reading a few articles about the subject, but still learning. One important question is what to do if I am unable to determine the type of paint that is currently on the boat? I understand that this is important for compatability. Is there a way to determine the type of paint? Thanks and fair winds, Brunson Russum Davidson, NC

Ask the prior owner

I was lucky enough to get a response from the seller of our h27 to be able to select a compatible coating.

If your in Lake Norman, I'd check with every haul out marina, they might remember the boat. At the same time I'd ask what they recommend for the area. Chances are that former boat owner went with what everyone else uses. My guess is that unless the former owner was a big racer he used a Modified Epoxy or an Ablative in which case you just need to light sand unless your going with a vinyl or teflon.
