After many years of adding new coats of ablative paint annually, yard suggests sanding bottom( grit etc) and starting "over".
I opted to go one more season altho some flaking is now evident, and do this after next annual haulout. Thre is no visible blistering anywhere on bottom at this point and I have dutifully re painted every year.
If you had the choice and were to spend this 2k plus, what options if any are there and what would you do.
I would not mind spending more than the present 2k+ estimate on another alternative and would like to evaluate all choices. Boat condition above waterline is beautiful and hardly shows her age. (2000 340).
( In Ches bay brackish water most sailing in northern bay)

If you can operate a sander, this isn't a big job. I took down the bottom paint on our 40 ft hull 2 years ago because of the same concern in less than half a day. Admittedly, I didn't always go down to gelcoat as I didn't want to get that close but removed virtually all the old paint and it was much easier and quicker than I had thought.

Do you have a barrier-coat? I would use a vacuum sander and just smooth the bottom and repaint. You can't be too agressive unless there is a barrier coat.

Or you could start with a power sander then finish by hand to get to clear gelcoat. Then decide if it is worth $300. to barrier-coat(five coats, one gallon each). The ablative will do much better on the epoxy then on the gelcoat.

Maybe your yard does not allow DIY sanding. In that case just a coat of ablative and take it out someplace else in the fall.

I would agree with Ed. Just get a vacuum sander and take down the build up.

Why do you need to paint every year? Is this common in your area?

I would make sure that your new bottom paint is a hard ablative like Micron Extra or switch to the new eco freinly paints. We are painting our new boat this Spring and intend to use Seahawk Smart Solutions. After several weeks of research we discovered that the copper based paints will be removed from the market. You need to make sure that what ever product you use is compatiable with the new generation of paints or you will be sanding again in a couple of years. Good luck and happy sailing
