New boat! questions

On my 222 I have an old 10hp Honda on it. I'm able to do 6.5 mph (according to gps) fairly easily. This was with me going against a slow outgoing tide. I cranked it up to see what I could do and 6.9 was about the most before it started squatting down pretty bad and just making noise.

You must have been going with the tide. Did you see the stuff up above about theoretical hull speed? You can't drive a sailboat through water faster than the hull speed unless it is one of the few sailboats that can plane. SMall racing sailboats like Lazers and Optimists can do that. O'Days can't.

I have an )23 and a Tohatsu 9.8. It doesn't take much throttle to reach my hull speed.

I would be pretty comfortable with 6-8hp on my boat if I were buying today. I sure wouldn't want to wrestle an outboard any heavier than what I've got on there.

Until you get into heavy seas. One day I was motoring into a 28 knot headwind which was going against the prevailing current. The waves were large and I was glad of my 9.8 that day.

I would be pretty comfortable with 6-8hp on my boat if I were buying today. I sure wouldn't want to wrestle an outboard any heavier than what I've got on there. For a 10hp 4 stroke, my honda is pretty lightweight. I'd say it's pretty comparable to a 10hp 2 stroke.

What does your lightweight Honda weigh?

It's about 75 lbs according to the manual. I'm probably missing a pound or 2 of paint though.
