I notice older boats that aren't kept on a trailer are weather beaten. I was wondering what I could do to prevent UV damage to the deck and trim, etc. I was thinking of some sort of a cover. Anyone who has an experience with using a cover, would appreciate your input.

Boat Cover

Scott, I had a H19 and had a cover made for it. Cost $900. We kept our H19 on the trailer all of the time and the cover was made to fit with the mast in trailering position. We just upgraded to the H260 this April and got a trade-in price equal to what we originally payed for the H19. We are considering a cover for the H260 and the sailmakers are estimating about $2300 in three sections to cover it. Lot of canvas.. But the with minor cleaning and waxing the boat will always look - just off the lot... Jim SV Java

Thanks,Jim

I was hoping someone might have info about covering the boat while it's in the slip. Apparently there's some problem with it. I've never seen a boat fully covered in a slip, but, thanks anyway!

Several with full covers.

Scott: We have several boats in our marina with full covers. From 24' up to a 33'. These covers a definetly a way to go if you don't use the boat all the time. They are custom made to fit the boat. The fit around the mast and the shrouds. Usually have some sand bags that attached to the bottom edge to prevent the wind from blowing it off.

Air Circulation

In the northwest it is not uncommon to see boats with full boat covers, especially in the winter. They can be pricy, especially depending on the detailing, but they do protect the boat. One thing to consider in a humid climate is air circulation. The air should be able to circulate otherwise mold and mildew can develop. If you start with a new boat, even if the cover isn't used all the time, the gel coat will not need to be waxed as soon nor as often. Once the boat gets, say 8 to 10 years old it will need to be waxed several time a year to maintain some semblence of luster, maybe more in the south. Either that or you get that dull look. UV protection will help prevent the hatches from crazing, protect the gaskets, brightwork, and protect the interior. On the down side, boat covers can attract cats and this can be a real bumber. Also, taking the cover off and puting it on again can be a chore too. Attention to details can make this chore easier.
