I'm taking delivery of a new 426DS in about two weeks. One of the options we went with was the Eco Flush head system. I haven't had any experience with these type systems and I was wondering if you'd have any specific advice on proper useage, maintenance, problem areas, etc. Additionally, the boat has two separate fresh water tanks, approximately 75 gal each. I'm assuming that even though brand new I'll still want to follow your 'fresh water maintenance guidelines' just recently posted. Is there anything unique about a dual-tank system relative to sanitizing, maintenance etc.?????

The Ecoflush toilet is just a VacuFlush with

a very small bowl. The owners manual has operating instructions. You'll also find an overview of how it works on the SeaLand website (link below). Yours prob'ly has the combination "vacuum generator" instead of separate vacuum tank and vacuum pump...click on the links embedded on the page to see it. It is ONLY a toilet...your holding tank is separate from it. It empties into a holding tank just as any other toilet would. As for maintaining your fresh water system, unless there's a lot of plumbing that isn't common to both tanks, it's not that much harder to recommission two tanks than it is to recommission one. If you're not gonna use enough water most of the time to keep it moving out of both tanks, you don't want to let water sit and stagnate in the second tank. Leave it empty, or--if that creates a trim problem, only fill both half full. You should get a full set of manuals for every bit of equipment on your boat. KEEP ALL of them!!! Even if the "manual" is only a single sales promo sheet...'cuz it will at least have the make/model and contact info for the mfr, if nothing else. And keep 'em on the boat, either in a 3 ring binder or an accordian file arranged alpha by equipment type --"bilge pumps, engine, heat/ac, toilet, winches" etc. Since you won't need it often--at least not after you've gone over every inch of your boat and found everything while looking at the manual to see how it works and how to maintain it--it can be stored in an relatively inaccessable space that's otherwise useless storage for most anything else...but when you need to check a trouble shooting guide or perform maintenance, the manuals won't do you any good if your don't have any more or they're at home. When you add or replace something, add or replace the literature in the file...not only will it be a valuable reference for you, but a Godsend for the next owner. Btw...you're taking delivery in two weeks...my book will be out in 3 weeks. It should answer a LOT of your question.

EcoFlush Toilet

There have been three changes to the ecoflush toilet spring and shaft over the past two years. Please make sure that you have a brass shaft and a black spring casing. If not, you have the previous model and,I guarantee you, it will break at a bad time. Your dealer can verify this for you in about 20 minutes by removing the spring cartridge under the flush pedal.(I have replaced three spring cartridges and all the seals over a 1 1/2 year period until Sealand, the manufacturer, sent me the brass spring and new cartridge. No problems since.) I did see the outdated product for sale at a marine plumbing store, so old models are still out there. Yhe brass spring is a remanufactured part from the full size vacuflush toilet. You may have to get it direct from Sealand. They were very helpful to me. Note, the pedal should be flushed down smartly and released in the same manner in order for the seals to really seal. We have had numerous problems with guests on the boat who treat it "gently". It is designed to be stepped on and then let it loose. Congratulations on your new boat! I am sure you will love it!
