I'm a newby here. I want to buy a boat for day-sailing, occasional overnighting, and occasional racing on Lake Coeur d'Alene. I'm looking at the new 250WK, 270, and 28mkII. Aside from obvious things like price, draft and roominess, are there any particularly good points or problem areas to help me select one over the others? Thanks to all who read this and especially to those who share their expertise and opinions. Rob

C250

Any Catalina will be a great boat for you, info on the C250 can be found here: http://www.catalina25-250.org/forum/ This site will answer all your C250 and towing questions.

any catalina

I'm sure any Catalina WILL be a great boat for me, but I'm wondering if any of the 3 models have particular known problems or any fantastic good points that the others lack. Thanks. Rob

Space

Rob The difference is space and cost. Really, that's all unless there are features you specifically like yourself. The C25 is a great boat, and very different from the C250. The C250 is the one Herb Payson and his wife have and write about in Sail magazine, including a trip to your lake recently. The C28 is a wonderful boat, but IMHO overpriced, and maybe even too much of a boat for your lake sailing, unless you're looking to learn how to run a small ship. The C27, also different than the C270 is also a classic, probably one of the most cost effective boats around, although C25 owners wonder why people pay more for the extra 2 feet when it's only taken up by the aft lazarette or motor hole. The C270 is newer and lighter and more like the C250 with weight. The "problems" you talk about are only things based on the age of the boat and the treatment it received from its PO. Catalina makes a great boat, all around in all sizes. Good luck, and happy hunting. Stu

You gonna tow it?

A 25 foot Catalina can be towed easily. A 27 or 28 footer cannot. That is a big difference between these boats. That 2 feet translates into a lot of weight and width.

tow

Randy- What does it take to tow a 27 or 28? Is it relatively easy to tow a 250WK?. Thanks for your reply. Rob

SUV or Pickup

A C25 can be towed with a good sized pickup or SUV. You'd need to check the vehicle specs. I think a C25 and trailer would weigh about 4500lbs. I tow a C22 (3500lbs w/trailer) with my GMC Yukon. A friend tows his with a Jeep Cherokee. I don't know of anyone who routinely trailers a 27 or 28 foot sailboat. They are simply too big and heavy.

Trailer

The C25 alone weighs 4,500. Add trailer and equipment, you're looking at 7,000+. As previously stated, if you want detailed info on a C25/250, ask their forum.
