Catalina 30 Rose Haven (Herrington Harbour)
I have a head problem also.

Thank goodness the Catalina 30 gang directed me to this site! I have had an '89 Catalina 30 for 2 years. Last year all was well, except the waste vent clogged, but that was easy to fix. This year started out well, but now the head is doing weird things. Up to now, the bowl has always been dry, even when heeling. Earlier this summer I arrived to find the bowl was full and overflowing on a very hot day. Since my boat partner had a party the weekend before, I assumed tank just needed to be pumped out. Did that, plus the nasty cleanup, and it worked for about a month, then bowl backed up to half full (think this might be where sea level is). Pumped out the tank again and within a week, water is back in the bowl again halfway up. When I pump the toilet down now, I can see the bowl filling back up - takes about 2 minutes. The literature left behind from PO says my head is a Par, but that might not be current. The base of the head is at or slightly above the level of the top of the holding tank. I have no anti-siphon loops on the system. The y valve is in the correct position and all the thru-hull valves (raw water intake, macerator waste out, and direct waste out) are shut. We don't use the bay water in the toilet - just squirt from the sink. I suspect one of the thru-hull valves is leaking, but don't really understand why the water/poo level got so high the first time, unless it had something to do with the very hot weather and expansion, but then again, the tank is vented. Is there an easy way to trouble shoot the location of the problem? Can that circular plate in the top of the tank, where the vent hose attaches be removed so I can see into the tank? (this of course would be after pumping down the tank again!) Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Irene

At least not yet...

Sounds to me llike a blocked tank vent is causing each flush of the toilet to increasingly pressurize the tank... creating increasing back pressure that's making it harder and harder to flush. It works ok for a few flushes after you pump out...then gets worse as the tank becomes more and more pressurized.

The most common location for a vent blockage is the vent thru-hull. It's even worse on Catalinas, 'cuz Catalina runs vent lines into rail stanchions that have only a tiny slit in the back side of 'em. I'd bet real money that slit is blocked, 'cuz dirt daubers love to build nests in waste tank vent thru-hulls...plus, heeling can spill waste out of the vent. So that's the first thing I'd check. And then I'd move the vent line to a real thru-hull that you can backflush regularly to make sure it doesn't ever become clogged.

The other common location for a vent blockage is the other end of line--that end of the hose and the vent fitting on the tank...they both get clogged by waste buildup caused by heeling.

If it's not the vent, it has to be the toilet...we'll deal with that if we have to. But I don't see any reason to spend the money to replace it, only to find out that all you really needed to do was clean out the tank vent line. Otoh, if Steve and Ron want to buy it for you...

So clean out the vent and let me know if that solves the problem.
