My 1999 H310 is now 1 year old. I have 1,087.7 miles under her keel in 1 1/2 short seasons of sailing. My question is this, Why in the world am I get so many gelcoat gracks? Some of the cracks are just hair-line cracks up to 3" long, some of the cracks I can get my thumb nail into and run my nail the length of the crack. The longest crack "was" 3 feet long starting at the bow on the water line and running on both sides of the hull a foot and a half. I say the crack "was" their but, it has since been repaired for the second time and hopefully the last time. As of right now, I have 13 gelcoat cracks that I am a whereof on the deck and in the cockpit. The smallest as I said is about 3" long. We have 9 new boats in our marina and mine is the only one cracking!!! What gives? Thanks for your time. Steve, s/v The Odyssey... (H310)

Not alone

Steve, you are not alone. My 1998 310 has cracks along the inside of each toe-rail, at the mounting points for the stern-rail, and at the mounting pads for the arch (even though I do not have the arch). No cracks along the water line that I have noticed. Have you reinforced any areas before repairing? Seems to me that any area proned to cracking should be strengthened to prevent flexing and a return of the cracks after repair. Has this type of repair been covered under your warranty? Crack repairs & warranty

Because my deal went out of business before I took delivery of my H310, Hunter took over the balance of my commisioning issues. Jim Bohart flew up to Wisconsin to look at my boat and than sent a FRP tech to fix cracks and other things that I had at that time. The crack on the bow was 1st. repaired by a subcontractor of the dealer, that guy did a piss poor job at best!!! This past spring, the crack reopened and was repaired by a local FRP tech. The area was renforced with glass mat and epoxy and that guy did a great job. So far Hunter has been very very good about flipping the bill. But now the warrenty has run out and as I said in the last post, these 13 cracks are new since spring launch. It seems like every time I take the boat out, I get more cracks. I know that I am going to get these cracks but, they should come much later down the road. The boat only has 1000 miles and 116 engine hours. Whats this boat going to look like in 10 years? Currently, I an thinking very hard about selling the boat, take a loss and buy something eles. Thanks for your replies. Steve...

Should not crack that much?

Cracking/crazing can result from many things, but basically it's brittle gelcoat reacting to stresses or flexing of the fiberglass. Most boat get some cracking/crazing over time, I have my share on my '88 35. I'd be upset by the amount you are experiencing on a new boat as well.

Call Hunter NOW!

Stress cracks are caused by flexing of the underlying structure. Sounds like the layup schedule was running late on your boat. Don't be a weenie! Call Hunter NOW and see what they'll do to repair this obvious quality problem. And most important, LET US KNOW WHAT THEY DO!

That is very unusual..

and it's unlike most similar occurances. But Bryan is perfectly right , and I have many hair-line cracks in gelcoat , mostly short, in cockpit , on curved areas , where stress and flex cause these cracks , on my 29.5; mostly appeared in few months after delivery anew. Frankly , good work , and better quality control shoud avoid this , as it does- significantly- to most other similar GRP boats..It'a a well known problem om GRP moldings ,and eassily avoided by proffesional molding design and adequent lay-up procedures. Hunter should take notice on this..
