New beneteau Owner

Hi,

We just purchased our first Beneteau, an Oceanis 321 from 1996. We had the mast stepped and are having problems raising the sail. Any pointers would help. Our engine is a Yanmar diesel and yesterday we noticed all of the transmission fluid had leaked. The transmission is a Kanzaki KM3P. We are in Fort Lauderdale and would like to meet fellow Beneteau owners as we are new to sailing.

For the sails, you need the lube sold at most sail stores to spray on the sails as they go up. We could not get the sails up each year without this stuff. I think it is called "Sail Kote" at West Marine. It is a dry lubricant.

On your gearbox, you said all the fluid leaked out. It is normal engine oil I suspect. It is not special transmissio fluid that I am aware of... If it leaked out on it's own, you may have a bad seal some place....

The lubricant is called Maclube and its by Harken.

There may be some hardware binding in the furler that needs to be checked as well.

Don't be too sure that the gaer box oil is plain old motor oil. It could be 90 weight gear lube or it could be automatic transmission fluid. You nay have to hunt for information about the gearbox.

I suspect some seals have dried out most likelly the shaft seal.

Thanks for the informmation. It is definitely transmission fluid. It is pink. The boat was out of the water for a few months so hopefully it is just a seal.

I have a 3GM30 Yanmar. THe manual says to put SAE30 lube in the gearbox. I need to change mine. I will check with the Yanmar dealer to see what they recommend.

Great News

We had our boat's engine serviced today and the liquid was diesel and water!!
The engine is now in great shape so we are heading out to the intracoastal and ocean this weekend!!
Pictures to follow after our maiden voyage on Sante!!

Thanks for all the advice and calls, I bought the lube today too so Ill let you know how that maunsail does.
