Hey Everyone,

I'm thinking of purchasing a brand new outboard (Yamaha 9.9 high thrust 25") and would like some input from those with experience.

I will be selling the old 1986 2-stroke Mariner. I got it running and idling but its impossible to find parts for it and "jerry-rigging" the bracket just doesn't feel safe.

I plan to do most of my sailing out in the atlantic coast and want the security and comfort of having a reliable/dependable outboard for when "things happen"

What do you all think of this choice?
Anyone currently running this motor on their Mac 26d/s?

Thanks

We considered the Yamaha, but went with an extra long shaft Tohatsu and have been quite happy. I think we would of also been happy with the Yamaha, but just didn't want to spend the extra.

The major issue with any of these is if you mount them in the motor-well on an S or D is that you won't be able to turn them much. We cured that with a mount I made.

More on the mount and why we chose the outboard that we did here...

Thanks Sum,

I went ahead with the Yamaha since I could get a 5yr warranty on it and I've heard really good things about this particular dealer.

I had the option of starting my warranty in the late spring so that I get the most use out of it. (I have at least 3-4 months until I get out on the water)

I can see what you mean about the limited space to turn the motor and really like the mount you've made. Unfortunately I don't have a welder or even know how to use one well enough to make something like that.

Want to make me one? Haha

The other option is to keep it straight and only use the rudder ....does that not provide a sharp enough turn?

Or I guess I could try to buy one...ugh more $$$

My boat's PO installed a fixed motor bracket. The motor is completely free to swing. It also keeps the propeller away from the motor. I googled "fixed outboard motor bracket" and came up with this, which looks a lot like mine:

The downside is that the motor is farther away. That doesn't bother me much. If I'm steering with the motor, I don't need the rudder and it's usually up. I just sit farther back when I'm leaving or coming back to the dock.

Especially when you're fighting wind, tight quarters, etc., it sure is nice to be able to turn the propeller all the way.

Normal running we just keep it straight. Using the outboard in conjunction with the rudder gives you lots of control in a tight space. It came in handy some of the places we were. I guess it is just going to depend on your situation and where you slip or put in and out at.

It only takes a few seconds for Ruth to attach the ....

...the linkage between the tiller and the outboard tiller so any time we get ready to anchor or dock she does that. Then she doesn't have to think which way to turn which and it only takes one hand and keeps the prop out of the rudder...

If you have to do much maneuvering at all I'll bet that sooner or later you buy a mount or have one made. Good luck and enjoy the new outboard,
