OK folks, I've made the plunge and just purchased a beautifully maintained 1988 28.5 (5.2'deep fin model) and have a "few" questions that I can't track down in the archives. Currently she is slipped in Kingston NY on the Rondout River near the Hudson and will be wintering in the marina's storage yard there (4 hours away:eek:). My plan is to haul-out, UN-step the mast and cover til spring. In the spring I am launching with her mast cradled on deck and my son has volunteered to help motor her up the Hudson, into the NYS canal system and over into the finger lakes, or Lake Ontario, I'm not sure just yet. My questions are. Should I replace all halyards with messenger lines for storage and the trip, advantages and or disadvantages? Has anyone done the canal system and have any advice? Realistic fuel consumption with a clean hull, Yanmar 2GM20F driving a 3 Blade prop running @ around 2800 rpms? Thanx in advance for any comments or opinions. PS: My h240 will be listed here soon!

Great plan! The marina inside the bridge? Can't remember the name but spent a few days there on the way to Florida. Use to live in Hyde Park and worked in Kingston.

I have wintered the mast both ways. This year I took the halyards home. But that was mainly to wash and soften them. They had spent three years in salt water. If you cover the mast well there is no reason to remove the halyards. One year I had selected some poor messenger line and almost lost one from winter rot. But if you think the halyards need replacing might as well remove them now.

P.S. great boat. I sail on friend's H28.5 here in Ohio.

Thanks Ed, the marina (Jeff's) is just past the 2nd bridge. The halyards are in good shape and they will be covered well. I wish I had some time to say I sailed the Hudson but mother nature has her way here lol. Spent the first night of ownership aboard Saturday night and woke to 4 inches of the white scourge of the north!

As a new owner, you may want to check out: www.huntertwentyeightfive.com

The deep draft version is a great sailing boat but you might think about replacing the three blade fixed prop with a folder or feathering prop if you want sailing performance. The 2GM20F uses less than 1/2 gallon per hour at 2800 rpm at a max cruising speed of 6 to 6.5 knots depending on wind and current.
Having the mast down will mean you will need to re-rig and tune the mast. Not many marinas are good with a B&R rig. For what its worth, it might be best to leave the spreaders and diagonal stays in place so only the outer standing rigging needs to be adjusted when you step the mast.

I would suggest that you remove the halyards and remove and inspect all of the sheaves. If any of them are marginal, it is time to replace them.

Be sure to check out all of your electrical connections too.

in the market for a Hunter 285 Lake Norman
I have a 28.5 with the deep fin keel. Very good performing boat with a PHRF of 186.

With my two blade prop, the best I can do under power is about 5.5 knots at WOT. I may need to clean the bottom!!

BTW, anyone know when the huntertwentyeightfive sight is coming back on line..... or is it???
