Spares
Chris:Water pump impeller, change it now and save the old one as your spare. Belts, same as above.Clean the air filter. Should be one of the foam ones. Wash, dry and replace.Replace the primary fuel filter. Buy a spare and keep it on the boat.Replace the engine fuel filter. Buy a spare and keep it on the boat.Change the oil and oil filter. This should be be done each season or 100 hours of operation. Use Yanmar Oil Filters.Change the oil in the transmission. (depending on the model, probably the same as engine oil 30wt)Change the Anti-freeze in the system. Be sure to use the pink stuff (ie: Havoline extenede life). It is suppose to help prevent electrolsis in the engine.Check the mixing elbow. An easy way to do this is to get a small mirror and a flash light. Remove the exhaust hose from the engine. Shine the light up into the elbow and make sure that it is not coked up. The coking is carbon build up. It will restrict your cooling flow and cause your engine to overheat and not perform well.Place a Oil absorb cloth under your engine to catch any toxics from getting into your bilge. If you don't have a high quality primary fuel filter (like a racor) I would recommend you get one. They have filters in these that filter down to 2 microns. If you have clean fuel going to your engine it will save you a lot of grief. Your fuel may be clean today but you never know when you are going to take on a bad load.Alway add a biocide to your fuel when refueling. Add the recommended amount to prevent alga from growing in your tank. This is one of the worst problems there is for a diesel (dirty fuel).Purchase the Yanmar manual for your engine. Probably about $40, just a good reference. Learn how to bleed the fuel system. There is a finger pump and a couple of bleed screws. You will probably only do this once a year (unless you run out of fuel and you really don't want to do that). Take some finger nail polish or bright paint a paint the bleed screws so they are easy to find.
