I received my brand new 240 this weekend (hull laid up in April). We have had rain the last few days, not good for sailing but great for finding leaks!? I am at a loss as to how to handle this situation. I am to expect some leaking, or should I demand that all leaks be repaired by my dealer? I know for sure that the forward hatch leaks. This is an easy fix with some weather stripping, but I also have a leak somewhere on the port side. This leak is right above a light fixture. The jib lead is bolted right above this area so I am assuming that it is leaking in through the bolts. Again, probably a fairly straight forward fix with some marine sealant. One of the reasons that we purchased a new boat was so that we could use the boat. Am I living a pipe dream thinking that a new boat shouldn't have these problems? Your thoughts are greatly appreciated. Nathan

suggestion

I agree with you about buying a new boat and expecting EVERYTHING to work properly and the workmanship to satisfactory. I suggest you keep a list of things that are not up to par and once you have identified most of the flaws, give this list to the dealer. In a few months you may have anew list...

No Leaks

For the amount of money paid you sholudhaveno leaks. I have a 1994 23.5 nad I have no leaks. Make a list, take it the dealer and make them fix it. You should be able to enjoy a new boat not fix it......

Old boats come with leaks and are cheaper. New

boats are a nice way to elimanate water leaks. It is done by caulking water leaks with money. The dealer has your caulk and needs to apply it to that beautiful, shiney object that gathers envy in huge quanities. Dryly go forth and enjoy. Ray S/V Speedy PS. Notice she named is "Speedy" and not "Shiney". She also leaks but sadly I have no caulk.

There should be no leaks

There should be no leaks, I bought a new 356 and on my first weekend at the boat I also found 2 leaks on the roof and one in the door and the dealer is tacking care of them.

Not sure

Nathan: I am not sure that you can expect the companionway to be leak free. This is sort of like leaving your front door on your house partly ajar and not expect some dirt and rain to enter the house. This is why many of us have purchased a cover for the companionway. It does not totally prevent these type of leaks but it really helps keep the boat drier and cleaner. Hatches and ports should not have any leaks ever. If they do you can have other problems in the future. This will tend to cause rot in the core of the deck and cabin. Get them fixed and never let it get out of hand. It costs a lot of money to fix a delaminated deck. As far as the rest of the boat, you should get your dealer to properly seal any leaks. This should be done in a professional way. Not just smearing caulk over the top of the leak. They should remove any piece of hardware and rebed it.
