Hunter 37 La Paz
Just bought 1981 37 in La Paz MX. Am back in USA getting parts etc. Forgot to measure diameter of staunchions-7/8ths or 1 inch?
Anyone know best Yanmar dealer to get some key blanks for 3QM engine? (with decompression rail)
What are the answers to all the questions I haven't asked yet? (From rudder slap to Bruce anchor securing?)
We'll be o the Hard @ Bercovich yard in La Paz from Nov 22 on for three weeks or so. Stop by if in area.

Key

Hi Bob, congratulations on the 37 Hunter. You will enjoy it for many years. As far as a key, if it is a Yanmar engine just use any similar style key it will turn the ignition. Don't worry all boats can be started by just about anyone.

Engine Stuff

For the engine, reccomend you evaluate "rubber stuff" like water hoses, belts, raw water impeller, exhaust hose. There is a lot of bang for the buck in avoiding problems in that area, especially the impeller.

I would also take care of zincs, including the one in the heat exchanger which is a Yanmar special part.

My 3QM30 transmission uses ATF, dexron III compatible. I did a double change on the fluid and since have stuck to the same brand. It is very important to treat that transmission well as from all I hear there are no longer any spares available. Make sure the shift cable is in good adjustment.

I use a type C 15W-40 engine oil rated for diesels, did a double oil change and have stuck to one brand ever since. Get some genuine Yanmar oil filters.

Change the fuel filters and ensure the fuel in the tank is clean.

The starter solenoid draws about 20 amps and if the wiring to and from the control panel, and the in line fuse mounted on the engine are not all good and tight then the solenoid will not kick in.

While on the hard check out the cutless bearing and shaft log.

If you are in the San Francisco Bay area I could reccommend my favourite parts supplier.

37C Welcome!!

It's good to hear from another 37C owner!

I am working on "restoring" mine from Katrina's gentle embrace. I have found that the folks here have been extremely helpful in all aspects of maintaining and enjoying this great boat!

If you get the chance to take some pictures, then perhaps you could post some here!

good luck!!

Congrats on "new" H37C.

Looks like you have already gotten a lot of good info. I did not see anything about stanchion size. I am pretty sure that they are 7/8" but do not buy anything expensive on that guess.

You could start with purchasing a Yanmar "Minor" kit to get the most important parts. Check the Torresen site for a list of parts then add what is missing from the kit as listed in other posts.

You will find so many things as time goes on that you cannot worry about getting it right the first time. Safety is the main thing and I include a solid engine with good fuel as part of that.
