What is the best way to sail, I hear that neutral but stress on gear box etc but that in gear adds drag. I dont want to change props. I like the instant responce to reverse. I have been out on my 272 twice and have been waiting for it to be delivered to my slip for 3 weeks now (we had flooding on lake). Today is the day! I could hardly sleep last night. Now my problem is trying to find a way to keep my 222 which I have put in way too many hours fixing up. I would hate to sell it and see it not maintained. Jim

depends

I think it is very dependent on the make and model of transmission If it is a Hurth, This might help: UNIVERSAL DIESEL WITH HURTH TRANSMISSION Model HBW-50 (2:1) Used on Models 12, M2-12, M-18, M3-20, M4-30, M25 and M-25XP Model HBW-100 (1.8:1) Used on Models 30, 35, and 40 Model HBW-150 (1.9:1) Used on Model 50 Model HBW-150 V-Drive (2.13:1) Used on All of our V-Drive Models CAUTION DO NOT LEAVE GEAR IN FORWARD WHEN SAILING. GEAR MUST BE IN NEUTRAL FOR FREE WHEELING OR SHIFTED INTO REVERSE TO LOCK PROPELLER WHILE SAILING CAUTION: TRANSMISSION MUST BE LEFT IN NEUTRAL WHEN SAILING, DO NOT LEAVE IN FORWARD GEAR WHEN SAILING WITHOUT POWER AS IT WILL DAMAGE GEAR. I usually sail in reverse. If I am in the mood to mess with it I make sure the shaft is turned so the prop lines up with the keel.

Thanks Richard

The Westerbeke is fitted a Hurth transmission you have provided an answer that I've been unable to find elsewhere. Brian

How about a Yanmar?

My 322 has the Yanmar 18. Should it be sailed in gear or out?

Sailing with a Yanmar

Yanmar uses a copy of the German ZF-Hurth gear. I'd also sail her in neutral. Pat McCartin Inland Marine Diesel Atlanta, GA
