I installed this Standard Horizon VHF, which has AIS receiver capacity, and I find I can output the AIS info to my Garmin GPSmap 541, or I can input the GPS coordinates to the VHF, but I can't do both at the same NEMA setting.
Since I really like the AIS targets displayed on the GPS, I have decided to look for a cheap GPS receiver that I can hook up to the VHF so I can get location information for my DSC function. I had found one online that had a NEMA output, but somehow it seems to have gone away now that I want to order it.
Anyone now where I can find one (similar to the type used for laptops) and how to hook it up?
I'm currently in Mexico and liimited in my ability to shop and import, but I do have a friend coming down who can bring it if I order soon.

I have the GPSmap 720 and the GX2100 and I receive gps info on the receiver and AIS info on the Plotter at the same time.
I looked at your manual and you have 2 nmea 0183 channels on your chart plotter. One regular speed and one high speed???
You should be able to do the same.
The attached PDF is the same for the 700 series.

=============================

Edit: Sorry didn't see the above post while posting what is below, so this is kind of a repeat..

I just looked at the installation manual for the 540 series and it looks like it has two sets of NEMA inputs and outputs so I would think they could be configured separately.

Looking at the 2100 VHF it has a NEMA COMMON and a NEMA IN and a NEMA OUT plus a second NEMA OUT that is HS 38400 baud output for the AIS to the chart plotter..

To me it looks like you already have what you need.

Run the HS AIS output from the 2100 to one of the 540's inputs. That will take care of getting the AIS from the radio to the plotter.

Connect the other set of inputs/outputs on the chart plotter to the low speed input on the 2100. Now the plotter is sending your position to the radio for the DSC.

The wire outs are shown in both of the manuals....

...manual loads off of the above page and go to page 6.

For the 540....

go to page 6 also.

That looks like a nice setup,

Sumner is correct. I have the 2100 also and the only reason for having the GPS to t he 2100 regarding AIS is to show AIS targets on the 2100 display.

I would suggest doing the gps signal from the ploter to the 2100 and leave the GPS reciever on the plotter. The Nema out on the 2100 only sends the DSC info to your plotter to show possion of DSC call.

in short, you have everything you need as mentioned.

Actually, I can change the settings and get both to work at the same time. But, if I turn one, or both, off and then back on, at least one of them doesn't display.
It was making me crazy until I talked to someone else who had the same setup and the same problem. He had called both manufacturers and at least one of them (can't remember which), admitted there was a cross communications issue.
So, the current condition is that I can get cross communications if I change the NEMA settings while both devices are on, but not if I turn one or both of them off and then back on...
Open to any suggestions to remedy the situation, and I'm hoping the additional GPS input may be the answer.

OK, I'm going to try Sumner's reconfigure on the wiring and see what happens. Should have read that before my last post.

Thanks,
